social media- the real recruitment game changer

by: Eyes wide open

We've all seen what 2 years of variable quota has done for Ole Miss recruitment. Has it been brutal at times? Yes, but honestly its always been a more difficult here for the OOS girls going thru- I think variable quota has given the in-state girls a little taste of this same medicine, and now that quota numbers are coming down, we are starting to see the lines get even MORE blurry between what has traditionally been seen as "top tier" and "mid tier" groups. Things are really changing- and we all have a front row seat to this change in the palms of our hands...our phones.

One of the BIGGEST influences on how PNM's are thinking about recruitment has come from social media. It's STUNNING what an eye opener Snapchat/Instagram/Facebook has been these past couple of years, ESPECIALLY since variable quota has started shaking things up and spreading many TOP PNM's into a larger number of 5-6 sororities, (sometimes even more) instead of the traditional 2-3. Now all next year's PNM's (the high school seniors) all around the country literally have a FRONT ROW SEAT to everything WE DO- Just hit the "EXPLORE' button on your Instagram and see for yourself! Scroll thru picture after picture ALL our awesome bid day themes (what's that you say, you can't tell the difference between who's a Tri Delt and who's a Pi Phi with all the tutu's and glitter and mermaid skirts? Me neither, but aren't they ALL beautiful!?) Videos of all the screams and hugs and running home, to pics of first swaps to big/little reveals. ALL of it is being photographed and videoed and put up on social media for the WORLD TO SEE. And you know what they see? THE TRUTH. The truth that instead of what you may have always heard in your small towns, or big towns, or from your moms and grandmothers, that you could ONLY want 2-3 houses at Ole Miss, now SUDDENLY you can see with your own eyes on social media that the BEST GIRLS in your hometowns are consistently joining what their mama's may have thought were "mid-tier" sororities, or even brand new chapters! It's an exciting time at Ole Miss, and lots of eyes are WIDE OPEN watching our recruitment system get better and better every year. Go Rebs!

It has definitely changed rush and the ones that thought they could just sit back and wait for pledge class to come running found out the hard way. You have to work these days to compete and if you don't you get stomped bid day.

This is ridiculous! Name one sorority that has waited for their pledge class to come running to them. Do you even go here? EVERY house works hard for their pledge class

@What? - not true.

Top 3 do little "work" (which is why PNMs you thought should pledge you went to hardworking mid tiers, and why a top tier had 50% PNMs rank it in bottom 3 after Round 1)

and lower sororities get laughed if they try.... Do you even go here?

Wow- SO true! I do think that "What?" ^^^ is missing the point-Everyone KNOWS that it takes s ton of hard work to get the best PNM's. But its not just the mid-tier groups that have to hustle anymore... Duh- no sororities are just sitting back waiting for girls to run to them. But social media is definitely leveling a playing field that was once tipped WAY in the favor of DDD, KD and Chi-O. Decades of tradition and a little bit of mystique used to surround these 3 sororities. they are still great groups, but now with social media playing such a HUGE role in things, there's no more relying on tradition and assuming you'll get the best girls simply because "that's just the way it always is here." Those days are over, ladies....

is all fake.

sorry, it's really easy to take 40 pics a night and post the best one after running multiple filters

if any girl actually based her decision on social media, you'll be in for a surprise

Something else that's making a difference is the increase in out of state students. Unless they are a legacy to a sorority there is a good chance they are coming here without the Mississippi Tier worship. I'm an OOS student, former cheerleader, class President, was a 4.0 student and I didn't even make it through the second cuts with the top tiers - and guess what....I didn't care. I am happy with my diverse middle tier! Every girl in my sorority is as 'top tier' as you can get, we just didn't graduate from one of the required Mississippi/Memphis private schools.

Some of us OOS top tier material ended up in lower tier houses due to lack of connections. Our recruitment is tough and if social media can even out the tier worship then good.
