rush lists

by: rush

My roommate tells me that she is already on a few sororities rush lists... how can freshman be on a list before rush? Does this mean that I won't get a bid if I don't know any sorority members to put me on a list? I am out of state and nervous about getting a bid anywhere. I am from the mid west but have had several ole miss alum write me recommendations.

I wouldn't listen to your roommate. Tensions get high before rush this is when rumors get started, Its called "tent talk" and take everything people say with a grain of salt. Keep your head down you focus on yourself.

First, I wouldn't worry. Almost everyone who goes through rush all the way gets a bid. It's rare not to get a bid. Second, what she likely is referring to is that the top tier houses pretty much know who they're going to bid - that's because those houses are mostly Mississippi/Memphis girls so they know all the girls coming through rush - high school, etc. friends. Sometimes an OOS girl makes it in, but usually those with tight connections n a house, although one or two non-connected girls get in too.

The mid-tier and lower-tier -- all full of great girls - don't do this (some mid-tier houses do have girls they know they want, for sure) so your odds will be better with them.

And as for your roommate? Maybe she is tight with girls in a house or two (like Jackson and Memphis girls might be), but that does not mean she is on their list although they may be rushing her hard because they know (and want) her.

Enjoy the week, try to stay calm, ignore tent talk, and pay attention to which house feels like home. Tons of OOS girls without connections get into houses every year. You can too.

This happened to me last year. Another PNM knew tons of actives in the house I'm now in. I knew I wanted my house but I only slightly knew a few girls. The other girl ended up getting cut from my house even though she knew so many actives and was really good friends with them (she loves her new house). Moral of the story, don't listen to tent talk. So many girls were promise bids to houses and were devastated on bid day when they found out the girls rushing them had lied. There's literally not one person guaranteed a bid to a certain house so when people tell you they have a bid don't listen.
