transfer student

by: OM19

I'm transferring from a community college and will be a junior when I rush. I have a 4.0 GPA ,but I am fearful I won't get a bid anywhere. No one in my family rushed. Is there anything I can do to make sure I get a bid? I mean how bad are my chances?

Hello! Like you, I transferred from a cc and rushed as a junior. I also didn't have legacy status at any of the houses. However, I did get recs for almost every house. Make sure you do that, it is very important! I have never been one to care about stereotypes and labels, so I did not care about the "tiers". I went into rush with an open mind, and luckily, the house that I fell in love with on Greek Day was the house that I received a bid from. Just a warning though, you WILL get cut from certain houses just because you are older, and that's okay! Don't get discouraged! As long as you have recs, look presentable, be yourself, and keep an open mind in order to give EVERY house a chance, you will find a home! Best of luck to you and go Greek!!

Looks like our resident troll is up late. Ignore her - she's got a bad case of middle school mean girl syndrome.

The reality is that your odds of getting a bid are greatly reduced, just like they are for sophomores. You could be a fantastic person, but houses want girls who will be dues-paying members for four years -- and you are competing against hundreds of freshmen.

It can happen - as written by posters above - but good to be aware that it is nor common. And as someone else wrote you will get dropped by many houses immediately (top tier and some mid-tier) because of being a junior (happens to sophomores too). Lower tier houses are ore open to older girls and there are loads of great girls there - there truly are no "bad" houses at OM regardless of what some people say. If you have a chance to get a bid, take it.

As long as you're aware of these odds - and know that it's not personal (heck, tons of girls get cut immediately after first round that are freshman), you can have a good rush and I hope you find a home!

As long as you keep your mind open and consider what all the sororities have to offer you will end up in a great house!
