unhoused sororities

by: Kate

Are any of the unhoused sororities other than SK planning on getting (or renting) a house any time soon?

ASA tried to get the ATO house back in the fall but I haven't heard any news from them or the others really

I know tpa is getting vetted for housing really soon. Haven't heard anything about ASA and as for DPHIE they're so new it might not happen for a while

This source is incorrect. TPA is known nationally for being unhoused. They didn't even try for the ATO house while ASA and DPhiE did as they had the intentions of staying unhoused. Either way, it would take at least 5 years for any of them to get a house. It's a long process. It will even take SK a good 5 years, 4 if they are lucky

Actually not. Asa is known for being nationally unhoused. Tpa has small nationals so they don't always have the money for housing, that doesn't mean they don't ever get housing. they didn't try for ATO Because they want permanent housing, not housing they'll keep for a few years.

ISnt TPA the smallest NPC national?

Yes, however, that doesn't automatically mean they can't get a house. Other theta phi chapters have houses and Indianas is working to get theirs. It will take time, but it is happening.

There are ASA chapters with houses and there are TPA chapters with houses, but they are all small chapters. Neither are known for being unhoused - they are known for making their chapters pay for them without national assistance. Affording a house at IU is a tall order and these chapters will have to be committed for the long haul if they are to do it - or rent a house from a frat getting kicked off. Honestly, their nationals suck at supporting chapters this size and it's a shame because they both have some really chill sisters. I'm not sure why they opened at IU if they weren't planning on helping their sisters obtain housing - at least on this campus where housing rules.

AePhi has the honors of being the smallest NPC sorority with 49 chapters. TPA has 54 chapters.

Wrong. Theta Phi Alpha is by far the smallest total membership in the NPC. They have only about half of what AEPhi has.

@size. WRONG! Check your references before opening your mouth. We are talking about #active chapters, NOT #chartered chapters.

Per Wikipedia (read it yourself)

TPA:53 Does not include recent Salem State University chartering
AEPhi:49

53 is not 1/2 of 49.

Wrong! We are talking about TOTAL MEMBERSHIP NUMBERS, as in people who belong to the groups nationally. Theta Phi Alpha is by far the smallest, having less than half of the next largest sorority. Number of chapters means nothing. You can have a ton of chapters when you put them on tiny campuses where no other sorority wants to establish themselves. That's exactly the story with Theta Phi Alpha. Their average chapter size was 47 total members in 2011 (which is easily found on the internet and I don't have time to look further for more information right now.) It is commonly known in national sorority circles that they are a dying sorority. You know it and so does everyone else, so stop making up lies.

With a few exceptions, both ASA and TPA tend to be on smaller regional campuses. Not sure how much it matters how strong their national is if those chapters can save enough money to build a house on their own. They are going to have to be smart, set up their chapter alumnae on donation plans as soon as they graduate. They need about $750,000 total to buy the land, set up their housing corp and secure the loan needed for a competitive house. It may take 5-10 more years, but they could do it with minimal help from their nationals.

Why are these small sororities with such weak nationals allowed here? I thought our Greek system was stronger than that.

By: Why?
by: Embarrassing

This campus has sororities that aren't even allowed on some D2 campuses.
further evidence that our Greek system is all about quantity, not quality.

I'm from suburban Chicago and I had heard about how competitive recruitment was here at IU. Then I went through it. It's a joke. If you have decent grades, are not a beast and can hold a conversation, you have nothing to worry about. I was totally underwhelmed. While many of my good friends at other Big Ten and SEC schools didn't make it through rush, I could have done it in my sleep. I wound up in a great house that most people think is top tier, but it just wasn't that difficult.

The problems with the IU Greek system are much larger than one person. It's not that competitive, the chapters aren't that strong, and the sisterhoods aren't that great. And NONE of that has anything to do with the above post.

Please elaborate. What are our problems if it's not the arrogant Greeks and elitist attitudes?

None of those tiny sororities would have been brought back if we did recruitment by the regular quota system like every other school. Look at DPhiE already failing.

It's hardly elitist attitudes that are causing weak chapters to be allowed on this campus. It's not arrogance that is allowing just about any national to colonize here, whether they can ever afford a house or not.

IT is absolutely arrogance - existing chapters bringing on additional chapters, because they think they are "too exclusive" to take total quota like every other sorority on every other campus in the country. They are bringing them on so they don't have to do the right thing. Arrogance and elitism personified. IF they took total quota, we would not need 23 sororities on this campus. We could probably get away with 16 - you know like that other semi-competitive Greek system at the University of Alabama.

To the person with no name and Actually, what do you actually know about national/international NPC sororities? Because a chapter isn't housed at IU doesn't mean it's a tiny sorority, that it can't possibly afford to get housing or that they aren't actively seeking housing. You frown upon unhoused chapters, and speak as if you know that these chapters are somehow lesser because they don't own a house yet. Here's something you fail to know - AEPhi, AGD and SDT are all smaller national sororities that are housed on your campus. DPhiE and ASA both have more chapters than AEPhi and SDT. And DPhiE is within single digits of AGD. So before you go speaking of "weak" chapters or tiny sororities, do a little research. You paint with a broad brush, and it just makes your community look silly.

Didn't DPhiE struggle through recruitment this semester? I heard they did not make quota the first round.

DPhiE did struggle with recruitment. My question is if DPhiE were housed, would they struggle with recruitment, or does the fact that they don't have a house put them at a disadvantage from the get-go, and then, for whatever reason, they don't do well?

Part of it is that everyone already has a bad perception of DPhiE. Even if they had a house, I feel that it wouldn't change much since personally, I had horrible conversations during recruitment at DPhiE. Since people have bad perceptions, they have a bad recruitment that they're not able to improve and can't recruit enough/quality girls.

If we can change the perception of many lower-tier sororities and even cut tiers all together (maybe instead just have positive personalities for each house instead of tiers), every chapter would have a successful recruitment and have quality girls who truly want to be in the house and will create a legacy.

I really like your idea of positive personalities. I think that would help girls find truer fits. Although I love my sorority, I really enjoyed learning the different personalities during recruitment. I also came into it not knowing most of their names let alone their reputations/tiers.
