Changes are needed

by: Wise

Panhellenic needs to make three major changes to the rush process:

1) Stop promoting a "Spring Informal Recruitment Process" after recruitment for gods sake like it's a secondary rush. No tabling, no advertising, no lists of participating sororities, just let sororities handle it on their own on the DL if they have a few spots to offer. Otherwise it just leads people on. We currently have a 69% bid rate of those starting out rush to those getting a bid because people drop out thinking they can get what they want in COB. They can't. They need to consider where they are actually wanted during rush and give those sisterhoods a chance. The best chance anyone has for a bid is during formal recruitment and that is what needs to be emphasized.

2) Allow a separate upperclassmen quota so second and third years don't have to compete with freshmen for quota spots. Great girls get cut just because they aren't a highly desired freshman, or don't rush at all, and then think they can get a COB. Let them get bids with everyone else during formal rush. Lots of other schools have this upperclassment quota system because it works.

3) Have a Variable Quota for a couple of years. This is a tried and true method at many other schools that have a huge disparity among chapter memberships. It restricts the number of invitations from stronger recruiting houses in rush and allows higher Quotas for houses that need to beef up their memberships. Combined with a lower Chapter Total, meaning only houses that really need members would be allowed to COB, it would allow pnm's to seriously consider other houses for membership that they wouldn't normally, and allow those to increase their sizes over a few years. Otherwise pnm's are still holding out false hope for a bid they aren't going to get from a few houses.

Combine all three of these and the bid rate will go up to 90% of all pnm's who start the process. There will be fewer ways to dirty rush and promise COB's because everyone will know who isn't going to COB in the first place, all houses will have equitable member sizes, sorority life will thrive. These technique have been proven to work. We no longer have bed rush, we need to take the next step.

100% agree that COB is not a way to democratize bids. Tabling and all these other requirements will do absolutely nothing but lead girls on, because ultimately houses should always have the right to do COB however they want.

But as for everything else, disagree. You can't do upperclassmen quotas because houses take a certain amount of upperclassmen depending on what their current number looks like and whether or not it would balance out their numbers. If you consistently have to take more sophomores, all houses will have a much higher population of sophomores than any other class and that throws everything off. Not feasible. You also shouldn't be entitled to a bid just because of your class standing.

Upperclass quota works at larger schools, think SEC and Pac 12. It works better for schools with an August/September recruitment because juniors will still have 4 semesters to be a member. Those upperclassmen don't count against the primary quota and it is expected that those women will probably never live in. They can be girls who transferred in from a branch or junior college or sometimes girls who missed out on Greek life freshman year due to low grades and have worked to get a second chance. IU would not be hurt one bit by upperclass quota. Chapters do not have to take upperclassmen but utilizing upperclass quota would help the middle and lower chapters.

You absolutely got it, @ not exactly. Quotas are NOT required numbers, they are LIMITS and there would be two completely separate quotas, one for freshmen and one for upperclassmen. Quota is not a 'have to' number but rather a 'not to exceed' number. So freshman quota is the number of freshmen signing cards after pref divided by the number of sororities, and upperclassmen quota is the number of upperclassmen signing cards after pref divided by the number of sororities. Two completely separate quotas. If a sorority doesn't want to pledge any girl then they don't invite her to pref. A simple way to help memberships and grow Greeklife and make the process more equitable to everyone.

And seriously…living in a sorority house ONE YEAR is more than enough. Geeze…100 plus estrogen, judging women in one house with no privacy is more than enough education IU can provide in any and all classes.

is it really that hard to get a bid through formal recruitment as a sophomore? Talking about if you had never rushed before

or just take more girls in the first place? idk but to me it sounds like there is a problem with not space for everyone to live in the house but at other schools with huge greek life living in is based on a point system so mostly juniors live in. i feel like sororities were allowed to take more people it would fix a lot of problems

There is no limit on sorority membership numbers. Every pnm who signs her MRABA card after pref without suiciding is GUARANTEED a bid. If more pnm's would stick with the process and not drop out then more bids would be given. It has nothing to do with space for living in, although that used to be the case but the recruitment process changed a few years ago and there is no longer a 'bed rush' system in place. The problem is that smaller chapters are not viewed as good choices, so 30% of pnm's drop out of formal rush because they are cut by the larger houses and goaded by panhellenic into believing they will have a second chance at them through 'informal rush'. By adjusting the RFM numbers for a couple of years and confronting the COB myth, the smaller chapters will grow quickly. A pnm's best chance to enjoy sorority life is through formal recruitment, but panhellenic is preventing this reality from being understood.

A PNM will continue their formal recruitment process based their personal preference as to the worth of membership in chapters that may not provide a standard the pnm desires of her LIFELONG GROUP. Settling upon joining "just any group" for "the sake of belonging" or "being the change you wish to see" in "just any group" can be unappealing and worthless to a PNM with precise, bold ambition.

Quota Adds are also allowed during Formal Recruitment. This is how so many campuses end up with more than half their chapters each acquiring a larger-than-acutal Quota Number.
