Because over the past 20 years, IU has kicked off 18 housed fraternities (pretty much everyone but Sigma Chi, FIJI, DU, & Lambda Chi). All the old traditions died off when chapters started over. Compare this to Illinois which has only kicked off 5 or Alabama which has only kicked off 3 over the same period. That is why other campuses still have Greek traditions and IU does not.

so why is IU able to kick off so many frats when compared to Alabama and UIUC? And why do they want to?

It is because IU is one of the few Greek systems where students have no input in the disciplinary processes. In the Big Ten, for example, there are only two other schools where students have no say in the process. At IU there are no clear rules and corresponding punishments as there are at other institutions. It is all arbitrary. An infraction that might get one chapter kicked off campus for five years might yield no punishment for another. In general, our chapters receive significantly harsher punishments than those at other institutions. If you want to fix this, you need to either separate from IU entirely or have Greeks take over the major student governing bodies (IUSG & Board of Aeons) to force changes.

As for why IU is so aggressive about kicking chapters off, look at the Bloomington Faculty Council Meetings which are available online....it becomes pretty clear the Greek system has quite a few opponents in that body. I believe the long term goal is the complete elimination of the Greek system or at least the fraternities. Since this can't be done overnight without risking the ire of alumni who have donated millions to renovate houses, it needs to be done over time through impossible to comply with regulations. That is what the Vision for the Ideal Greek Community and the Agreement for Housed Greek Organizations are all about....IU can claim "we tried to work with these organizations, but they couldn't be salvaged."

Judging by what my friends from other schools say, it looks like we have good parties but other than that greeklife here unfortunately brings absolutely nothing

That is the result of what what said above -- kicking off almost every chapter over the past 20 years. What the administration doesn't understand, is that by doing that you kill the good traditions along with the some of the bad. Then you "outlaw" any type of pledgeship. Thus, IU fraternities become nothing but drinking clubs.

I'm proud that our fraternity that is constantly striving to be different and better than the others. I'm proud of our SigEp for adopting substance-free housing and a three legged dog
