Coming from the south to IU, how is iu Greek life different from bama, ole miss, osu, etc. I know it’s as big as a lot of southern schools but how is it different

FIrst off, We dont really care about old money and there aren’t any old row fraternities and old row vibes. It doesn’t take as much influence/connections to get into a fraternity as it does in the south and fraternities here are open towards different people. Unlike much of Greek life in the south, we have a lot of kids from all over the country and of different racial backgrounds. For example, SAE nationally has a pretty bad history of racism(OU SAE a couple years ago) and was actually founded in the confederate south, yet SAE at IU is pretty diverse. Houses here aren’t just a bunch of dudes in chubs and vineyard vines shirts/ Hicks waving around confederate flags. One of the biggest differences is that Pike is irrelevant here, they’re a respectable fraternity and a powerhouse in many southern schools but they irrelevant here. Also, IU also doesn’t follow many of the fraternity traditions that they do in the south. One of the worst things about IU Greek life is that our school doesn’t really support it and is trying to get rid of it, compared to southern schools. Overall, IU has a big Greek system with massive houses and long roots, just like the south. It’s a little different tho.

The issue with IU is that most of the chapters have been kicked off at one time or another over the last 15 or so years...so any ingrained traditions have been lost as a result. While IU has a large greek system, it is not as stable as large southern greek schools like Florida, UGA, Alabama and Ole Miss. As a result, things we have a much weaker IFC which has little to no real authority.

Also, in the South, the houses that are considered "top tier" are ones that offer the whole package. They are houses that are tops in grades, looks, members that serve in prestigious/competitive leadership organizations on campus, etc. Here, our most sought after chapters are the ones considered "hottest"... end of story. All the "top" chapters have the worst grades and focus on parties only. The chapters that have strong grades and serve as leaders around campus are considered "middle" tier. There are beautiful women in all chapters, as there are in the South, but they don't universally receive as much respect.
