girls slipping through the cracks during rush

by: gal

I know theres a huge problem at IU with many very cool girls slipping through the cracks during rush, as someone who is decently good looking, and very outgoing, can anyone give any tips to help me not slip through the cracks? what are things you did or said that you feel helped you or made you memorable

As someone who slipped through the cracks I can’t quite help ya on this one but just know that if you do slip other girls will be in the same boat as you! I ended up in a house I wasn’t so sure about but there are so many cool pretty girls in my pc who were in the same situation and tbh I love the house I’m in and the girls I’m with. Go to all your rounds and don’t drop, just see what happens!!

I think the bigger issue at IU is not that girls slip through the cracks it is that geeds and pnms don’t understand the tier system (it’s really not possible to until you’re in a house) and are too emotional to make a rational decision at the time that they’ve been cut from every single house they thought they could be slightly interested in which is sadly something that happens to a lot of people because they go in with a lot of biases. Many girls go in thinking “I’m pretty so at least one top or top mid house will take me” it is not enough to be pretty there are gorgeous girls in every single house and for some houses connections, wealth, and social media are just as important as looks. The tiniest percentage of people get into those houses by standing out during rush so a better bet is to try your hardest to stand out first semester (showing face, insta, meeting actives) and go in with an open mind for rush because you won’t cut houses, they’ll cut you

A lot of girls that “slip through the cracks” can’t imagine themselves in any house but one or two so they quit rush when they are dropped by those one or two houses. Those who go in with an open mind usually end up placed and happy.

I rushed with 10 of my friends from first semester and noticed 3 (maybe 3.5 different cases of girls slipping through the cracks)

PNM #1: didn’t actually slip through the cracks. Just was way too closed minded. This girl had all of us losing our minds before rush, telling us these “secrets” about rush, talking about how she couldn’t wait for 200 sisters, saying sorority life was definitely for her... girl we just rly needed to study for finals please chill. This girl also only saw herself in houses like chi o or pi phi, and while those are great houses we all knew they weren’t her. Would later complain about being dropped even though she still had great houses. Finally dropped herself because her attitude was so bad.

PNM #2: just wasn’t as great of a conversationalist as she thought she was. She still was closed minded, not as much as the one before, but she later dropped before pref round. In reality all my friends knew she just did not make a good first impression, even though she’s really great. Rush you have to be able to be your best you for 5 different girls within 30 minutes and that’s hard for some people.

PNM #3: there was no reason really. Just ended up being dropped from most houses early on. Nothing anyone could pin point. BUT, keep in mind for all of these girls, they still had houses, they just dropped because they weren’t houses they liked/saw themselves in. Which is fine if you gave it a shot and genuinely don’t see yourself there, but you’re not without options.

PNM #3.5: rushed, got a house, wasn’t their first choice after pref. I had multiple friends have this and 3 of them came home from bid night crying. However, looking back every single one of them say they are so happy they ended up in their house and could not see them in the other, trust the girls in each chapter!! They know where you belong!!!

Like I said above, you have to make the best first impression in 20 minutes. This means looking your best and being bubbly, outgoing, nice, talkative (but also a good listener) and friendly!!! Don’t try to be someone you aren’t because that won’t work out, but be yourself. And even if you’re so freaking tired you have to suck it up. All the houses that I didn’t give as much effort and was exhausted at I was immediately cut. Besides that, I had a good rush and ended up in a good house. You just need to be the best version of you for 30 minutes.

This is the best explanation I’ve seen yet. PNMs stick it out until the end. The odds are NOT in your favor, and the sororities have all the control. Keep your options open and don’t think that you’re too good for the “bottom” sororities because there are amazing girls in every one of them.

I think the zoom round should be eliminated. The girls should just choose their top 10 houses and enter the second round. Zoom is not the best showcase for anyone IMO

Almost every school has gone to zoom or video submission for first round. This is because the sororities have already made a lot of their decisions based on GPA/resume/connections, which has always been the case. The zoom/video just replaces the first round in person which has always been a tie-breaker for the few pnm's they are on the fence about.

Choose their top 10 based on what? Greekrank?

Exactly. What if there was a public ranking site featuring pnm's like there is for greek orgs? And the sororities actually used that instead of looking at the pnm's qualities and meeting them during recruitment, and would choose to invite or drop pnm's from their recruitment because of how the ranking site put the pnm's into tiers? And what if the sororities based their opinions on pnm's from what the frats said about them? Would pnm's think that is fair?

I think houses on zoom should be numbered and not by house name. Find out who you got back second round and maybe you would be surprised by ALL the cool girls. Not just certain perceptions.

Instead of deciding you’re “too good” for 14/22 chapters, you could give them a chance. Sisterhood is what you make it, and you’ll find it in every house. You will not “slip through the cracks” of every chapter- you’re gonna get cut from chapters who don’t think you’re a good fit. Find confidence in yourself and your new sisters instead of ranks.

If those girls who think they are better than certain sororities would all just join those chapters where they are actually wanted, then according to their own reasoning, they could all be the better girls they think they are as sorority sisters together and enjoy greeklife in better chapters.

If you think that a certain set of letters automatically validates you or makes you a loser then you need to go back to middle school. It is not that way in real life. You will be whatever you are in any house and any respect or admiration you get from your personality or looks will be because of yourself. There are 'top tier' girls that are hated on campus, 'bottom tier' girls that are loved. You have not be approved or rejected in any way because of sorority membership.
