transferring

Currently a sophomore and in a fraternity at a very expensive private school and long story short I can no longer afford to attend here and will be transferring to IU. I’m from Indiana and I know some people in the same frat as me. Will I be able to join my current frat at IU? Would I have to pledge again?

Side note: I’m young for my grade and won’t be 21 until halfway through senior year so just going to bars isn’t an option

For most national fraternities, the affiliation process is up to the local chapter. You wouldn’t go through pledgeship again because you are already an initiated member, nor can you join another fraternity at IU per national IFC (NIC) rules.

I would reach out to the guys at the IU chapter that you know and talk to them about it ASAP. You need someone in your corner if it comes to a vote before the chapter. If you know the guys well enough, I might suggest coming for a visit this semester so you can get to know other guys in the IU chapter.

I’m sorry circumstances beyond your control forced this on you. I think it says a lot about your character and maturity that you didn’t pressure your parents to help keep you at a school your family can no longer afford. Additionally, it speaks highly of your intelligence that you didn’t try to stay at that school by ratcheting up tons of student loan debt. I wish you the best of luck!
