keep an open mind people

by: sorority

Keep in mind, I am not bashing ANY chapter. I believe all chapters are great and unique in their own way. I am just here to tell my story and give girls a perspective. Going through recruitment, I got super caught up in the stereotypical "tier system" and told myself I had to be top tier. I had best friends in one of the top houses and was positive I was getting a bid from them. Well, I ended up getting dropped the round before pref and only had an unhoused chapter left. I was 100% shocked and dropped out of rush. A few days later, I got a call from a "lower tier" house to come over for informal. I was so conflicted and couldn't see myself in that house just because of the reputation and social status that people told me about. However, I went to COB and ended up getting a bid. For some reason, I felt like I needed to take it and give it a chance. Well now here I am, two weeks later and I absolutely love it. I can't believe people talk down about lower tiers now. This completely opened up my eyes to when people say "keep an open mind". I have found a group of really cool girls that are super fun and outgoing that I love. So my advice to anyone rushing next year, really do go in with an open mind. I promise you that you can find atleast a handful of girls you like in ANY chapter no matter what tier they are in.

Same thing with me... Rushed all the TT houses like I was recommended to do... Not only did I not get a bid, but I hated them all. All they cared about was their image of a Top Tier house. Last day I went to a lower tier house that I had liked during tables and I love it now. TT houses kinda suck tbh

TT houses have some fabulous girls, but in their quest to “look” TT their priorities get messed up. IMO, mid-to-lower “tier” sisterhood is almost always tighter. The girls are more free to be themselves instead of trying to fit the spray tan, long flat hair, party girl image that they think frats love.
I can’t believe the hate lower ranked houses get and the number of girls who drop because they think their life will be over if they go there. They have no idea what they’re giving up for Instagram.

So well said. Like a lot of people I got caught up in being in a house that was “top tier”. In all honesty, I think it is almost impossible not to get caught up in it. People talk, and it’s very hard to keep an open mind when everyone around you is saying that certain houses are “better” than others. I got a bid from a house that wasn’t my first choice, but I decided to give it a try anyways. Even on bid night I was so overwhelmed and felt so out of place that I wondered if I should just drop. I decided instead to give it a shot. Now two weeks in I’ve met people who I might not be super close with yet, but I could see myself being best friends with and living with next year. I’m not saying being top tier is bad, hell some of my good friends are “top tier” and they are some of the nicest people I know. I just think once you get into a house and start to get to know the girls, the tier system doesn’t even cross your mind anymore and you just enjoy the company of all the people you meet. The tier system may always be part of IU to a certain degree, but once rush is over (at least for me) it doesn’t even cross my mind anymore.

Could not agree more. Now, if somehow people were actually able to convince pnms of this before recruitment, a lot of them would be saved a great deal of heartache. It is sort of something you have to experience to understand it is legit.

This! It's nearly impossible to get freshman to understand that top tier doesn't mean good and bottom tier doesn't mean bad. Tiers are based on what tier you party with. That's literally it
