sorority rush
by: futurehoosierI am going to be attending IU in the fall and I plan on going through sorority rush. I've heard some stories that a lot of girls don't get a bid, even girls that fit the "sorority girl" profile completely. What does it take to get into a sorority here?

I rushed in 1987 and that year,a record 5000 girls rushed for 600 spots at a total of 20 houses. It was ridiculous to see how many girls did not get bids. I lived in Forest that year and our of 40 girls on my floor who rushed, only 10 girls got bids. I was sure something would be done in the 20+ years since I graduated. Sadly, nothing has changed.

Hello and good question! I rushed at IU and ended up with my top choice. FIRST= I would first and foremost say to worry about your freshman academics. When I was there the GPA cut was 3.2 and I think it is similar now. Most of the 28 girls I went to 22 party with in the fall were not even able to participate in January. Second- think practically about your rush experience and not about the house's rank or if others consider it good or bad. Ask the girls you meet at the house parties quesitons about life in the house. Be interested and talk about what you like to do for fun. Talk to the girls rushing with you- a lot! I actually made some of my biggest decisions after speaking to some of my potential "rush classmates" while waiting in lines for the parties. Afterall, THESE are the girls who you will join the house with and you need to figure out if you would like to live/socialize with them night and day. For instance, I became friendly with a girl who was in many of my groups and lived in my dorm. I liked her but I was much more serious about academics than she was so that helped me look at the house. This is a lot like the college choice you made as it is a "mutual" selection process so this is as much about you as it is them. Stack rank your houses before you make each cut and always keep a "saftey" house on the list. Bonne Chance!

One other item to add- I had no recs or dinners or legacy at all to the house I chose. I made a connection with the first girl at this house over some common interests and just continued to have "good conversations" from then on. I think you need to remember that this is more like a massive group job interview and you need to come up with something to make the girls remember you.

That simply isn't true. There has never in the history of mankind ever been a sorority recruitment that had anywhere near 5000 PNMs. Alabama is the largest in the US and just recently broke 2000.
I would suggest that if your not getting a bid from a sorority still hurts so much that you're trolling the internet almost three decades later, you could benefit from some serious therapy. Please stop upsetting these people living through it now with your ridiculous hyperbole.
