rush for transfer student

by: transfer student

I'm currently a freshman at Bama right now but I'm thinking of transferring to IU in the fall. I was in a sorority at Bama but dropped right before initiation so I could rush again at a different school. I know Bama's rush is the most competitive in the nation, but how similar is it to IU's? What are my chances as a sophomore transfer student? What do sororities value the most when selecting pnms? I know at Bama grades, connections, and involvement are the things most looked at. Not sure if it matters, but I'm also from Chicago.

IU's recruitment is just as brutal, if not worse than Bama's. The % of women getting bids is low compared to other campuses. Chapters look for the same things as chapters at Bama look for. At least you will have the fall to try and get to know some people before it starts.

What would you say that percentage is? I mean Bama dropped over 1000 girls during rush this past year out of 3000. Also, if you're not in a sorority at Bama, people don't give you the time of day. Is this the same attitude IU has and if so, how would I be able to make friends in sororities?

IU roughly drops 50% of the girls going through rush. So out of the 3,000 that register, only 1,500 roughly (less usually) get bids. The process is very competitive here, but if you could survive Bama you can survive this. As a sophomore, it's ALL about connections.

Are there any rush events I could go to during the fall where I could meet girls or anything of that sort? I'm a social person so I can make friends but I'm not sure how willing sorority girls are to befriend someone not already in a sorority. Sorry for all the questions! I'm just trying to decide whether I should transfer here or if it's worth it to rush.

Sororities have fall philanthropy events that are a great way to see some of the houses and definitely talk to some of the girls. Rushing as a sophomore is more competitive and you're likely to be dropped by total "top" tier houses unless you know a lot of girls and have a high gpa, so if that's what you're looking for I'd reconsider. But otherwise most sororities do take sophomores and you will have a great time if you take the chance on getting into a "middle/lower" house.

As a member of a sorority here, rush was one of my worst experiences ever. One of the Rho gams was throwing up and sobbing because she couldn't bare to deliver the lists to girls. Many girls drop and many girls simply don't even get invited to any houses for pref round or even 9 party. Pledge classes here are roughly made up of about 50 girls. And now with one less house there are even less spots for girls. This winter 2000 girls signed up to rush and about 1000 got bids. And this includes the unhoused sororities. Spots are priority to freshman usually unless you know a lot of girls in the house. I have friends at bama and it's not nearly as close of a bloodbath as iu rush. Just being 100% honest

Bloodbath is one of the most accurate descriptions of IU's rush I've ever heard. The most physically, mentally and emotionally exhausting two weeks of my life.

At Bama, they have pledge classes of 100+. This was the first year IU used any type of quota system, and it was only about 50 women. To say its competitive, is an understatement. The replies above are very accurate.

grades and involvement don't matter as much as just having good conversations and clicking with people. connections can help, but definitely wont guarantee you anything. like it's good to know people in a house who can pull for you, but they can't make any executive decisions about who gets in unless you know/are related to the president/ and maybe the recruitment chair. Just try to meet as many people in the fall as you can and you'll be fine.

As a person who rushed as a sophomore and is now in a house, I can definitely back up saying that you need connections. Many houses take like 5 sophomores max out of the obligated 55 number. But w that being said, just meet as many girls as you can in the fall

What if someone doesn't transfer until second semester of sophomore year, missing out on making connections during first semester? Are they totally screwed for rush?

Education wise you are making a better choice coming here than to Alabama

Alabama is a better school academically than IU I have to admit. most people who go to Bama scored 30 or higher on the ACT. Bama also has a 50% acceptance rate.

The Midwest girls who end up at Alabama are the ones who couldn't get into any big 10 school. Total backup school. They wouldn't be at Alabama if they could have gotten into iu uiuc Michigan etc... you are delusional

My best friend here got into Harvard and chose to come to Alabama for a real college experience. I was picking between Boston College and Alabama and chose Alabama for the same reason as my friend did. I got accepted into U of I, UWMadison, and obviously IU if I'm transferring. You're the real idiot. Everyone I have talked with that is an out of state student all got into top tier/Ivy League colleges but chose Bama for a number of reason. I'm not trying to bash IU. I'm simply speaking facts. Does Alabama accept those with ACTs lower than 30? Absolutely but they're usually in state kids.

What is the ranking based off of? It's not reliable. Come to Bama and find out how the academics really are here.

This post. I ended up at IU because their acceptance rate is 70+ compared to most desirable UC campuses acceptance rate of 17-38%

Connections and grades dont matter nearly as much as being fun and easy to talk to. My best advice is to relax and make the conversation unique so they will remember something that you talked about. I rushed as a sophomore and ended up in a top tier house and I have friends who did the same, so dont worry about the fact that you're a sophomore.

Unfortunately the other thing is many houses have a look. If you don't look the part you are likely to get dropped. It's sad and shallow but true. Even if you were cheer captain, class president, with a 4.3 gpa, without the look and vibe you won't get in

Could someone please give me the run down of which houses have which look?
