help please: rushing a fraternity as a sophomore

by: SpartaninEL

I'm a sophomore looking to rush a fraternity in the Spring. I didn't rush my first year because I was a young freshman (started at 17) and my parents were against it. I want to Rush Spring 2012.

Is my being a sophomore going to hurt me? Which good/decent fraternities should I rush for the best chance at getting a bid?

Also, what can I do to help make sure I get a bid? I came from out-of-state and don't really know many people on campus. I really want to make sure I get into one so that I can find a close-knit group of friends, sort of my home away from home.

Thanks for any advice/info you can provide - I appreciate it!

Go Green!

If you don't suck then check out, pike, sigma chi, fiji, snu, lambda, theta chi, delta sig. If you do suck, then don't bother rushing

Don't even bother reading the comment above. I am also out of state, and if you are looking for a home away from home don't bother looking at the higher tier houses listen above. They are huge houses where the brothers don't even know eachother, the stereotypical 'frat guys'. If you're looking for a close nit group of real brothers check out the smaller houses on campus such as Phi Psi, Theta Delta Chi. You being a sophomore won't hurt you, these houses are not interested in numbers, rather quality of brothers. If anything you will find your time spent in these smaller houses far richer and worth while than your time in a larger house.

During spring rush make sure to visit most if not all houses, pick the house that best fits YOU, whether it be big or small. Don't however, pick a house for its name or status. In the end, greek life is what you make of it, and that is how it has always been. Pick the group of guys you can picture yourself being a brother with years after college is over. College is only 4 years, brotherhood is forever. Remember that.

getting to know the brothers during rush week is far more important than just walking into the house and thinking that since its a nice house then the brothers must be awesome and nice too, don't be tricked! have no regrets

stay away from the houses that have more issues and drama than they can resolve

My house had 70+ guys before rush this year and I can honestly tell you that I know most, if not all, of them very very well. They are all awesome guys who reflect well on our house and I know that each one of them has my back. That's not to discount the strong brotherhoods of smaller houses or to justify large houses who don't know each other well. However, just because a house has high numbers doesn't mean the people in that house aren't all really good friends with each other. Each house is different both big and small.
