The relative who was in the sorority will have to fill out a form to send to the sorority so they know you're a legacy. Just telling them isn't proof you're a legacy. They have to go through nationals and do all the required paperwork so that the sorority knows you're a legacy.
If you're asking because you don't want them to know you're a legacy, the answer is no, you don't have to tell anyone. Make sure no one fills out a legacy form on your behalf and no one will know. But I have no idea why you would not want to take advantage of your legacy status. That's odd to me.

being a legacy is usually advantageous to the PNM. if anything, it can automatically get you one foot in the door, whether or not you are interested in joining the sorority/fraternity.
