TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Delta Sigma Phi is the most recent University of Arizona fraternity to close its chapter amid accusations of hazing and other policy violations.
The Beta Omega chapter of more than 100 members closed on March 25 because of “multiple and egregious violations of university and National Fraternity policies,” the organization's executive director Patrick Jessee stated in a news release.
The release detailed the fraternity's “repeated disregard” for the national organization's policy about alcohol and hazing in January and February while the house was on university probation, set to expire in May 2015. The fraternity's interim suspension meant it could not host activities or have contact with its new members because of issues with “hazing, endangering, alcohol and off-campus conduct,” the UA's list of Greek sanctions states.
The list of hazing allegations says new members drank to the point of passing out or throwing up; were forced to exercise; ran errands for active members; among other things.
Jessee said the national organization plans to work with the university and alumni to restore the chapter back on campus at the end of the 2017-2018 school year when the disbandment ends.
This is the latest in a string of suspensions and sanctions for University of Arizona fraternities.
Phi Gamma Delta, or FIJI, won't be recognized on campus until 2019, in part because of an investigation involving a member who fell from a dorm building and was killed in April 2014.
In 2013, the local chapter of Pi Kappa Phi was closed after more than a dozen incidents including hazing and underage drinking. They are not eligible to return until May 2016.
Tau Kappa Epsilon and Phi Kappa Psi were also accused of hazing and alcohol violations and can both come back to campus in Fall 2016.
Delta Chi's chapter recognition was removed in April 2012. The Dean of Students said the house's “multiple violations of off-campus conduct involving unsafe behavior… presented a threat to the health and safety of members of the UA community.” It's is the only fraternity not eligible to return to campus.
