sorority big/little sisters

by: Sarah

I am planning on rushing in the fall. I have heard that UofA sororities do not have close big/little sisters relationships. I have friends at other schools and their big sisters became their closest friend. Is it true that UofA doesn't have much of a big/little thing?

No.. Lots of girls have close relationships with their bigs and littles. This really depends more on the individual sorority. Some do big/little and don't place a lot of emphasis on it, others make a big deal out of big/little.

I was worried about the same thing coming to UA this fall semester. I really wanted to love my sorority experience. I will say I had a tough time transitioning and finding a place in my pledge class, and my sorority is usually incorrect mislabeled/frowned upon by other Greeks (sororities, not frats) and I absolutely love my big. She's been my saving grace, my best friend, my closest friend. UA and the sororities have nothing to do with how close you are with your big, but rather it is pure luck and chance that she finds you and you two click, whether through recruitment or big/lil sister pairings in the first few months. Good luck!

I have a lot of friends in all sororities and also see it in my house too and it's sad it's only a few that are close but a majority only really care at the beginning then just don't talk to them really after. Definitely seen this all throughout sorority row

This definitely doesn't apply to all sororities. In mine, it is REALLY rare when big/littles aren't friends.

To the OP, you can't expect to be paired up with a big and be automatically bffs. It doesn't work like that ever in life. But most of the time bigs and littles end up friends or with some sort of meaningful relationship.

I think it also depends on the house. Some houses will pair you up pretty randomly, others will take time to match each pair as carefully as possible. This is definitely something to ask about during rush at each house if it is something that is important to you!

I have never heard of this supposed reputation that U of A sororities don't have close big/little relationships. That doesn't even make sense. How can that apply to a whole campus of sororities? Being close friends with your big has nothing to do with the school or even what sorority you join. It's about luck. Some girls get paired with girls that are their other halves. Some don't. But how on earth would that even have to do with what school you go to? It's definitely not a cultural thing.

I guess it MAY be a little bit about which house you join. If you pick a house based on things other than sisterhood, then yeah, you might not end up with sisters you feel close to. If you end up in a house where you adore all the sisters, then you'll probably end up with a big you love. I guess this rumor may have something to do with the fact that U of A has a huge problem with tiers and girls liking houses only because they're considered the prettiest or most popular.

I am a freshman and my big is my best friend here!! You just gotta meet as many older girls as you can in the very beginning and see who you have the most in common with! finding a big should come very naturally, if you try to force it then you guys won't be as close!(:
