so... asa

by: lol

ASA's "emerging chapter" (lol wut?) had their bid day last yesterday. Check instagram for pics.

Not saying anything negative but it's pretty much what everyone predicted.

Thoughts? Predictions? Will they make it? How will they stack up next to other houses? Will they be able to recruit competitively even without a house?

67 girls compared to AXO's colonization in 2013 with 150. ADPi's in 2008 had around 150 as well.

Factoring in the amount of girls that will drop (Around 15% - it's inevitable with any colony) they will be severely under total and will most likely not participate in formal recruitment next year. Which is what EVERYONE was saying would happen. Of course ASA didn't listen.

Without a house, they are doomed. Their colony was not able to recruit quality girls and that on top of not having a physical house and local alumni support, they will not last.

Which is unfortunate because we really do need more sororities. Chapter total/quota is way too high. We need smaller pledge classes.

The problem however is real estate. Until we have space for more sororities to build houses, strong national sororities will not want to colonize here because they know it is a lost cause.

Even if more sororities opened without housing it still wouldn't decrease the pledge class sizes because girls who specifically WOULD like to be in a sorority without living in a house (because of money, extracurricular responsibilities, what have you) will only look at those chapters. The pool of "traditional" rushees will not decrease.

It's a frustrating situation all around.

This is exactly right. The only reason other NPC sororities didn't present was the housing situation. They know they can't maintain a competitive chapter without a competitive facility. ASA does not maintain housing at very many schools. There is always a discrepancy between housed and unhoused, just look at Indiana.

Are they even going to try to compete in formal? My impression was that they wanted to be a small, alternative "un-sorority."

What does that even mean?

Considering DDD had 87 members last spring despite recolonizating in 1990, I think ASA is doing perfectly fine. It's really early in the semester and I'm sure over the course of the year quality girls who don't want to deal with formal recruitment and/or want to be involved in Greek leadership will join them.

Yes, they are at a disadvantage without a house, but PLEASE try to support them. If they fail it's not just gonna look bad for them. It's gonna look bad for all of us. If you think KD, ZTA, DZ, etc want to be associated with such an unfriendly Panhellenic community then you're wrong. We have to support DDD and ASA or no one will touch us.

I agree that we should support them.

However, looking at the most recent colonizations, and basing their chances of success in comparison to those, it's not looking good for ASA.

You can't really compare them to DDD when DDD has an actual house, is a strong national organization and has alumni support. Plus $$$.

It just wasn't a good idea to colonize when you have no desire to be a house that wants to participate in formal recruitment. That's just not the kind of sorority that will thrive here.

It will be interesting to see where they go from here.

"Recolonizating" best word ever. Thank you Snoop Dogg.

Also, Tri Delt may have $$$ and alum support to the skies but it isn't helping them to become a more popular and desired chapter. If ASA (or Tri Sig or D Phi E or any of the smaller national groups) had been here since 1910 and all that time been a strong performing chapter with a house, their national status would matter not one whit.

Disagree. After DDD's recent pledge class, it's obvious they are making strides to improve. Looks like they're doing a "re-org" of sorts by taking super small but high quality pledge classes until they can build their rep back up. It's an alternative to folding all together and recolonizing in a few years. Personally I think they would have been better of recolonizing but if they can pull this off, more power to them. I think it will especially help them now that ASA is here to take the new bottom house spot.

But the point is...if DDD is so strong and awesome nationally and has all these fantastic resources, then why the hell didn't they think to do that before? The chapter has struggled for years. My guess is that the actives in the chapter finally pushed back and told DDD nationals that bidding everyone with a pulse wasn't the answer. National$ always say that "quality not quantity" is a copout, but oftentimes it really is the truth.

Honestly I think it has more to do with phc. Bot houses HAVE to bid everyone per their rules. Just like pnms have to maximize their options to be a quota addition if necessary to get their bid, houses have to maximize their options and take everyone in order to take quota additions. Some phas also wont let the chapter cob for a year if they dont (idk if ours has the cob rule). Im guessing it took a bit of talking to either work with panhel to get out of these rules or nationals just said "screw it we'll help fund your chapter while youre in the red due to low membership while you rebuild"

Please do not listen to @Dic above. No NPC sorority mandates their chapters enroll just any living, breathing, interested female student as a new member.

All 26 NPC member groups have policies, purposes, standards, rules, and regulations regarding the type of women who shall be eligible for membership. An overall standard of quality remains highest above quantity when choosing new members.

As to a few of our chapters having low membership numbers, no campus is immune to that type of occurrence. The problem of boosting numbers is likely first left to the individual sorority, and a strong panhel will definitely support their efforts to grow. A campus admin will sometimes be highly supportive toward its fraternal orgs.

The ultimate decision as to how long a smaller group remains on campus is best determined by an individual group itself, working within panhel and campus limitations.

Yes they are. They had their bid day yesterday. Also they've had an instagram since April. It's @asa_uofa. Follow and watch them rise in the ranks. They're going to crush every other house.

They invited girls from all the other sororities to attend their bid day. Where were you? Everyone on campus knew about it.

Lol who talks like they're so sure of things when they have no idea what they are talking about? Dummy.

ASA is soon to be top house. Just fyi. So you better start talking about them. Follow their insta.

I personally think the forming of ASA will help our current bot chapters. cuts will be heavier in recruitment since we wont need to take as many new mems which will drive more mid girls down to the bot tier and just about everyone would prefer a house so they'll be the house to dodge. I dont think asa would mind either since they want to be that little houseless chapter. kinda seems like it benefits everyone.

by: @well

What you're describing is what SHOULD happen when a new group colonizes. But as you can see from every other post in this thread, ASA won't be as large or as strong as the other chapters on campus, meaning it won't affect recruitment/pledge class size numbers all that much.

the whole point of colonizing is to take girls from a wide variety of years so that you have girls leading the chapter who aren't also balancing the transition to college, lol. if a colony was all freshmen it would be a disaster.
