asa coming to campus

by: pan

Now that ASA is officially joining panhellenic at U of A, what do you think this means for other sororities on campus? Obviously new sororities don't have much of an effect on top houses, but what about the bottom? Will this be good for houses like Tri delt and AXO? Or will it take potential members away from them.

For anyone that wasn't around when AXO recolonized a few years ago, it destroyed tri delt. All the girls that would have gotten bids to tri delt chose to try their luck with a colony because it gave them a chance to build something rather than join a house with a poor rep.

What do you think? Discuss.

My. And everyone here wonders why no other NPC desires to colonize at Arizona. No one during recruitment gets stuck with a sorority they do not want, all they do is neglect to list it on their final pref card. How did the Alpha Sigs ever receive a colony invite if so many fine upstanding students voted no? Do you understand how unfair it is to judge a group of women without meeting its members and learning its history and values? Take a photo of your words here and re-read them ten years from now, as surely you will want to remember your fine words and hospitable attitudes.

Wait, what? No one gets stuck with a sorority they don't want? What the eff are you talking about?

I know PLENTY of girls that got bids to their last choice. You sound extremely uninformed.

No one gets stuck with a sorority they do not want when they realize BEFORE THEY SIGN A PREF CARD they have total choice to walk away without a bid.

Women have total choice throughout the sorority recruitment process.

No sorority is forcing women to go through recruitment.

No sorority is holding women hostage and forcing them to sign pref cards or list houses they do not want.

No sorority is forcing women to accept any bid they receive.

Is that enough information for you?

Indiana University. They are an unhoused chapter, but a very strong chapter that is completes very well with housed sororities, they make quota every formal recruitment and is much stronger that the other 2 unhoused sororities (DPhiE & TPA).

Bottom tier there and no respect. Comparing them to DPE is a joke since they're about ready to close. ASA will be the only unhoused chapter left then since TPA is getting a house. Hahahahahaha another weak sauce move

Can you name a large ASA chapter at a large, super competitive Greek school? Like a Division 1 school...And does anyone know why they call it an "emerging chapter"? Everyone else calls it colonies.

By: and....
by: wrong

More than a few sororities are calling their colonies by new names, its the PC thing since some women demanded the change (liberals on coast campuses).

Besides Indiana ...

They have an upper-middle-tier chapter at Penn State. The sororities there have dorm floors instead of houses, but you can't deny that Greek life is huge there.

They also have a housed chapter at Delaware that's solid mid-tier. UDel has only had sororities since the early '70s, and the top houses don't really compare with the top houses at your typical big state school, but Greek life there is pretty similar to Penn State (i.e., big and wild).

NPC sororities have 26 diverse criteria in deciding when and where to apply for a colony chapter. ANY of the 26 NPC groups is welcome to apply for "open expansion" campus slots. Alpha Sigma Alpha took their opportunity to apply here, our campus accepted their application to present, they presented and were accepted to colonize. Nothing untoward or illegal occurred in having ASA fill our empty sorority slot. Why should UA continue to experience unmanageably large formal recruitment new member classes? Alpha Sigs WANT to be here. They bring over 115 years of sorority expertise to the job of making their UA chapter what it should and will be. Five years of hard work is the absolute minimum norm for an NPC chapter to become what it should be on ANY campus for ANY group. Time, love and tenderness in all things makes a better campus and student life experience. Give your new ASA chapter their earned chance to live and grow.

Your campus and its panhellenic plan long-term when making their sorority choices. You will only be at university four years. Don't sweat a decision that was out of your hands.

Maybe ASA will be never have a house, they are doing fine at Indiana where most all sororities have houses, but ASA does not.

Bottom tier there and no respect. DPE is a joke since they're about ready to close which will firmly cement ASA as the very bottom chapter because ASA will be the only unhoused chapter left since TPA is getting a house. Hahahahahaha another weak sauce move.

They're only doing fine there right now because up until the past year or so, Indiana participated in "bed rush" meaning they only gave out bids for the amount of spaces open in the house. Everyone was required to live in the house. So with 2000 PNMs rushing, and each sorority taking a 50-70 pledge class, there were TONS of leftover solid pnms that the unhoused sororities could pick up.

Up until recent years Indiana had the most competitive rush in the country. The unhouses sororities, while bottom tier, were never short of pnms to give bids to.

But other than that, I wouldn't call a bottom tier sorority "doing fine".

Every list has a top and a bottom, unless you list sideways. In that case, it's a left side and a right side. All NPC houses are right on top, and no group is left at the bottom. We pull together and stand up against those who mean well.

This is getting way out of control. If all these sororitys are bad mouthing ASA before they even begin, then why did the NPC extend them an invitation to colonize at UA? The sororitys are spending WAY TOO MUCH TIME ON THIS POST. You can tell about 95% of these comments are written by horrible sororitys.

By: Oh Please
by: @oh please

it wasn't NPC that extend an invitation to ASA, it was the college PC & they were arm-twisted to do so. the actives are pretty upset. & it's obvious most of the posts here are coming from the adults involved in getting ASA to Arizona. Yeah. Sad!

If there is no room to build a new house regardless of how monied their nationals are, what does it matter who gets picked? I mean if it had been ZTA instead & the chapter would be unhoused for the forseeable future, would people be any more welcoming? I thought the main issue was that PNMs don't want to join a chapter without a house.

Several people here claim pnms will be "stuck" with ASA bids when they "could have gotten a bid somewhere else". Just a note to pnms reading, there is no "stuck" if you do not list a final preference for ASA. There may be a "stuck" with no bid if you suicide pref list, but not listing ASA means no "stuck" with ASA.

By: sticky
by: 😺

The stuck part is where they keep appearing over and over again on your invites when you have no interest in them and rate them as your bottom but they have such low return rates they have to invite everyone back. You're stuck with them and a sorority you want at pref. The weak chapter artificially reduces quota when almost no one is going to accept a bid.

Quota is not artificially low simply because a women doesn't list a weaker house on her pref card/mraba. Quota is determined by the number of women ATTENDING any pref party. If a woman decides not to list any house (even tho she had a top house and a bottom house) quota will already have been determined. Not many women who attend two pref parties refuse to list at least one house on a mraba.

If a woman with only one weak house attends her one pref party then refuses to sign her mraba, quota will already have been determined because she attended her party.

It defies reason that a high number of our students would have only a weak house left for prefs, and that they in turn would refuse to at the very least attend said pref party before completely refusing to sign a mraba. I give our women credit for being open-minded, fair and impartial when attending recruitment.

1) uf you don't list all the houses you went to pref parties at you are ineligible for quota additions. So yes you can be "stuck. "

2) I think what the poster meant who said about quota being artificially reduced is that even if a chapter fills quota on bid day, if a large number of those women drop out before initiating, that's a pledge class full of women who will not be Greek, whereas if the sorority they all dropped hadn't existed, they would have been distributed amongst the other sororities. (Holy run on sentence)

PNMs should be committed to assisting and working within the parameters of any of our sororities. By opting to be recruited, pnms should make themselves available to any group willing to offer them a home. PNMs really need to understand the sororities perform all recruitment choosing and bidding. Top houses are always going to have their pick of the pnms. Women desirous of their sorority membership bid need to adjust their sights and realize the potential in every home they visit, not just the top homes. Women need to graciously offer their accomplished selves to any home within the NPC sorority system, and there are thirteen Fall 2017 groups at Arizona vying for your skill sets.
