how does rushing work

It's not really competitive per say, if the brothers in the frat like you they'll give you a big. After you've talked to all the brothers in the frat, the brothers will discuss with each other whether they want to extend an invitation(bid) to you or not. If you get bids from several fraternities, you have until the end of rush week to "drop" a bid, which mean accept. If you drop a bid at a certain fraternity, that means that you have accepted that fraternity.

If you're relatively social and the brothers like you, you'll most likely get a bid at at least one place. Just make sure you're feeling relatively positive and talkative during rush, but don't act like someone you're not or you won't be able to maintain your mood. Whether you get a bid or not (even though you will probably get 1+ bids), it honestly doesn't matter that much as long as you have good friends in fraternities. Your friends can let you into parties and you don't have to pay dues or have to deal with the time commitment.

Some "top-tier" fraternities are of course more selective than "lower-tier" fraternities, and you it may be harder to get a bid at the top ones. The lower ones often give them out like candy as long as they like you. Make sure to rush as many fraternities as possible while still spending a good amount of time at each, so that you have the most options when deciding on a fraternities to join.
