advice to get into a sorority as an out of state?

by: out of state

I'm from northern virginia and i know the south is very big on sororities. I've always wanted to join one, but I'm not sure what to expect at UT Austin. I know connections, look, and tradition are important, but what should I be prepared for in order to get into a pretty good house? What are the reputations for each sorority, etc? Also, this is random, but what do girls typically wear during rush week (universities in my area rush after winter break)

In your situation, it would be beneficial to sign up to live in Hardin (Red House, if you can) and start getting sorority recommendations from Texas alumnae in addition to letters of support from any family friends that were in REPUTABLE chapters. That is, if you're interested in something top tier. In the end, however, they decide whether you're a real fit. The girls from your area that tend to do best during recruitment often go to private schools. However, good public schools aren't ruled out.

For Pi Phi, Kappa, and Theta, Texas connections are essential. You're going to want to get in touch with alumnae associations so they're familiar. ChiO, TriDelt, and Zeta are also big on recommendations. Start now so you can get on the radar. Don't do any of this last minute, because it's a lot of work. I'd recommend one good personal letter of support from an alumna, and two rec forms per house minimum.

Though a rec from a Texas chapter alumna for each chapter may be preferable, a rec from any in good standing alumna of the national sorority can be submitted and be helpful, especially if that person actually knows you.

Live in Hardin house, or callaway or SRD. If you live on campus then rush will bot be good regardless of how awesome you are. you need recommendations letters (atlas 2) for the big 6 (pi phi, chi o , theta, zeta, kappa, trident) and I would get a rec for alpha phi, and a chi o and DG

Recommendations won't matter. All about connections. Try to meet some people before rush

thank you all so much for the advice, I will definitely get started on the recs asap! (:

what should i do in terms of making connections? Would this be like following girls on instagram or?
and in regards of the houses, whats the difference between SRD, Hardin and Callaway? I heard Hardin is more geared towards girls who will probably get into PKT (and if I'm being honest i probably won't get into those top houses)

thanks and sorry for lots of questions!

You never really know. PKT has taken OOS girls from hinterland suburbs. In my totally unbiased opinion, Hardin is way more fun and you're likely to get into a much better house because Hardin. Or that's how it was two years ago. Follow my advice, I'm feeling generous

Do they really consider which dorm you’re living in as criteria for choosing you? I’m just wondering why that even matters.

yeah I know some sororities seriously take into consideration where you live which is so dumb bc who really cares and it just shows how different greek life is at ut than every other school in the country

the reason why where you live is important is because it shows you know people/knew enough about UT Greek life to figure out where you would meet people and be around hopefully fellow Greek sisters! It doesn’t sound like a lot but a huge part of my Greek experience was making best friends with the girls in my house who lived in the same dorm as me.

My best bet would be to reach out to anyone currently in Greek life you know at Texas or to make friends and go out during orientation with girls in sororities. Getting on the radar of rush team is so a important - especially if you are OOS!

We take OOS girls but unless you have an absolutely incredible personality that stands out during formal rush most girls will not know you! If you have someone who can stand up and say they’ve heard good things about you or have been told out to look for you, it can make a world of difference. Recommendations and knowing alumni or girls going through is such a huge help because too often there are amazing girls going through who don’t know anyone and it makes it so hard to take a chance on someone random vs someone you went to camp/school with for years!!
