could we have more sororities?

by: curious

How come we don't have more chapters here now like they do at places like Florida, Alabama or even TCU?
UT is such big a campus. We don't seem to be growing greek life like so many other universities

We don't have these:
Alpha Gamma Delta ΑΓΔ
Alpha Omicron Pi ΑΟΠ
Delta Zeta ΔΖ
Gamma Phi Beta ΓΦΒ
Phi Mu ΦΜ

I did a little searching.. We are much less pro-sisterhoods than SMU percent-wise. And Alabama too.

Alabama undergrad approx. 37,000

Approx. 55% are female 20,350
Well over 30% of those women are in Panhellenic sororities

SMU undergrad approx. 6000.
Approx. half are female 3000
About 40% of those women are in Panhellenic sororities

UT undergrad students approx. 40,000.
Approx. half are female 20,000
Less than 10% of those women are in Panhellenic sororities

Dear SMU, many of the UT chapters did not close because they weren't "acceptable" either. There is always more to the history than what's on the surface.
And yes, I agree with you, Zeta was a good chapter at SMU.

It time for UT Panhellenic members to rethink their future.

sure, they closed because they were completely acceptable, which meant many girls wanted to be a part of them....right. goo phoo boo? no thanks. same on dz (super weak) and the rest of them. cred to kampus dawgs for making a solid comeback after their first failure.

At least one of those chapters was closed by their national organization because of risk management issues, so yeah not all of them were closed for not being "acceptable."

No NPC in its right mind would choose to try to colonize/recolonize at the nest of vipers that is UT.

Vipers. Witches. Negativity. Small...

How sad for this university. No Longhorn pride. Someday, I hope we will all see what we could be. And act on it.

After reading all the comments it strikes me that UT sororities are generally satisfied with an exclusive (and well stagnant) Panhellenic system.

The "upper" chapters don't care what the newer or "lower" chapters are offering women without connections. They are about " who you already know" or "want to know" because of their status or wealth, etc. That's good for them. And they work very hard to sustain that club culture that prior members have created for them.

The "lower" chapters are totally proud and love their orgs. for what they offer women coming here with smarts and goals. These women are looking for a classic sorority experience. And they offer this.

Both tiers are grades smart. Otherwise they would not have been accepted to UT. Both have the money to pay dues, maintain a beautiful house, and generally all that goes with it. Sisterhood cultures differ a bit but not that much. Friends are friends. Some are for life.

Will the system ever be open to expansion or change? Maybe, Maybe not. When leaders of both "tiers" visualize something better and then act on it. Something amazing could take place. (It's in their power to do so, even if they can't see it)

As with most organizations: a system that is not growing is already fading. Not a terrible thing. Just not the way I think of UT.

greek life at UT isn't fading fo sho. We are just fine with it as it is. Everyone has a place.

Yes, all chapters have 'smarts' (this is UT, after all), great events/sisterhood and the money to do all that goes with it along with personal travel, etc. The only difference is connections and looks: those with connections go big 6; those with looks and fewer connections go key 3 and those with no connections and the occassional lack of looks go with the rest.

GPB is top tier at KU and TCU and a lot of other places. They are nationally strong and probably the only sorority that could survive at UT. Like others have said though, I don't think anyone would be interested in opening here with the attitudes of people like mmmmm so prevalent. Disgusting.
