COB Chapters???

by: ???

Hi. The cob panhel page only has 4 sororities listed (piphi deeph kd gphi)… is it normally only a couple that do it? I thought there’d be more. And if there’s only four doing it does that mean they’re chapters with the highest drop rates and worst rush numbers? :/ Sorry if it’s a dumb question, but I’m trying to figure out if I should cob now or rerush next year… I’m worried about joining a chapter with poor retention

some of the better chapters chose not to post it on the cob panel page so i would reach out individually, but also the ones that aren't posted already know who they want to cob al

From what I’ve heard all chapters met quota. We have a really strong greek system here, where luckily that tends to be the case every year.

Everyone likes to assume that doing COB means you had a bad recruitment and didn’t make quota but that is not the case. COB comes into play because of total being reset.

Chapter total membership numbers get reset every year right after recruitment ends. Let’s say quota was 50, and everyone met it. Panhel then looks at all of the houses and figures out the a good spot to keep everyone fairly even in terms of numbers, to account for the fact that some houses may have had more seniors graduate and leave, or some may have had less. Some may have had people drop or transfer schools, etc. The reset of total by panhel helps all chapters maintain healthy numbers, it creates sort of an even playing field, and it keeps the Panhellenic community strong.

If a chapter is below that new total, their HQ will expect them to fill in the numbers with new women through COB in order to get back to total. Every house will have members drop, or transfer or graduate, sometimes early. It doesn’t mean they have a weak sisterhood. It’s just life!! I’d guess that a majority, if not all houses would have at least a space or two to fill once recruitment ends, unless they are ignoring their nationals rules about maintaining chapter total. And if they don’t this semester, they easily could next year due to the inevitable drops that happen over the summer, etc.

Some houses fill their spaces through word of mouth/having members recruit their friends, etc. Others, will advertise through panhel or find potential members in other ways. None of it is wrong or bad! If you are interested in a specific house, and have friends in the chapter, ask them if they will be looking for any additional members. Reach out to panhel or reach out to the chapters listed on the panhel site.

For people who wait to do COB, the downside is no one is there to hold your hand to make sure you get considered by every house. The reality is, you will likely only be considered by the few advertising COB or ones where you make a good contact/have a good friend. Yes, you get to avoid the stress of formal recruitment but that does come at a sacrifice, too.

Regardless, do it! You’ll never know where you’re meant to be until you start the process.

And let’s stop with the assumptions that COB=bad recruiting, etc.
Imagine how strong our greek system could be if we put all that negativity into building each other up?!!

All the chapters doing cob are great. If you are considering, start talking to houses asap so you don’t miss out on activities with the rest of the PC.

And the person above is right. I am in one of the houses above and we had a lot more people graduate in December than usual and our nationals requires us to try to fill those spots.
