are all houses like aphi?

by: UMich

I read the recruitment doc for APhi and I'm wondering if all the top tier houses recruit like that, or just them. Also, do they even still do that, especially after the scandal?

no. no houses recruit like stated in the recruitment doc. not even aphi. if you go into rush thinking every girl you talk to is judging you on your looks you won’t realize how important it is to have real conversations because that means more than your appearance. however, of course appearance plays a minor role in rushing nearly any chapter because when you walk into any house the first thing they notice about you is what you look like. it does play a bigger role in “top tier” houses but not as much as you’d think. those girls tend to care more about their looks but there are 50-60 girls in each pc and every house has a pretty diverse group so stereotypes of houses aren’t very representative of the whole chapter

Unfortunately with the way rush works you get like 5 minutes to make an impression on a recruiting girl. That means how you talk and what about, whether you smile, whether you’re a minority racially/by class standing(Sophomore+)/in some other way, and, yes, your appearance, come into the impression you give. It’s human nature to extrapolate from limited information if you don’t have much so all houses will have some degree of unconscious bias and in some cases conscious bias (ex: some sororitys will instantly cut all sophomores+ and whatever you say/do won’t change that). Yes Phi explicitly recruits heavily for looks as does (but more down-low) a couple of the other upper houses. But no most houses recruit nothing like the Alpha Phi exposé and for most houses it’s nowhere near that shallow.
