ross pre-admit vs. northwestern & brown

by:

I'm torn! Yes, Ross is 90% pre-admit now but it still feels good to have it locked up. Is NU or Brown worth the extra coin or just Go Blue?

This isn't even a debate: Both NU and Brown are far superior to Ross. Nobody outside of campus even knows what Ross is - it's just a marketing and accounting college.

First of all, Brown doesn't even have a business school.

Second of all, there's a big difference between undergraduate and graduate rankings when it comes to business programs. Ross is considered to offer one of the best undergraduate business programs in the country, while Kellogg's isn't even in the top 10 (going by USNews, which is usually the most trusted).

Obviously the graduate schools are a different story but OP is clearly an incoming freshman.

First off, undergrad "business" degrees are a laughing stock. Ross is a marketing school ... marketing is for Big Ten sorority girls.

Economics at both NU and Brown is highly respected and makes you a peer. Nobody is impressed with a Ross BBA. Sure, you will make solid money after graduation but NU and Brown kids get any prime gig they want. And when the NU and Brown kids want to go get an MBA or JD, they'll get into a better program.

Ok well I was assuming OP would go on to get an MBA like most business majors do. I don't think anybody really cares about a BBA, from anywhere really. Doesn't matter if it's from a school like NU or not. My point was that he could go to Ross for his BBA and somewhere with a better MBA program like NU afterward.

i was a pre admit this year, i turned down top schools for financial reasons and because an econ degree isn't as marketable as a BBA. save your money for grad school and take the ross seat

Why does every Ross douche lie about turning down higher ranked colleges? Ross kids are the most status-obsessed tools on campus ... from "prestige" internships to laptops to clothes to vacations. Why would they turn down a high status college? They wouldn't. It's a lie. Brown and Northwestern are far more elite than a marketing degree from a state school. Engineering is all that makes Michigan undergrad elite.

wasn't lying and a lot of pre admits in this class turned down similar schools. no debt in undergrad vs. 250k in debt to northwestern or brown? i got into hopkins and uchicago, and the ross decision wasn't a hard one. it's no contest, and the average pre admit ACT is like a 33 so clearly they are getting into other top schools with stats like that. clearly you have an axe to grind against ross, we have one of the top finance programs in the country and if you look at job placement and starting salary, it's a great program

Isn't Ross BBA like 75% out-of-state kids? For OOS students Ross vs NU, Ivy, Chicago, Duke is a cost neutral decision. For in-state kids, the elite privates have ridiculously generous financial aid packages. So again, I don't believe it.

If I was interviewing you and you told me you turned down Chicago for Michigan I'd end the interview. You obviously are either a liar or just make really poor decisions. And if truthful, you must also fear competition, i.e. intimidated easily.

As for finance, an engineering kid will get any IB offer over a Ross kid.

To whoever posted this: If you're still reading this, don't listen to what half of the people said above. For some reason, they're clearly salty about not being in Ross because the vile words they used are just uncalled for an unnecessary. I'm not in Ross but I understand why you're conflicted about choosing UM-Ross over Brown or NU, as those names are arguably more "prestigious." But I can tell you this, this is an amazing school where you'll meet lifelong friends and have fun here more than you MAY (can't promise) at those schools. You'll make the right call - don't listen to those people telling you to go elsewhere as they're in the minority at this school.

I applied to Michigan as a pseudo safety, Northwestern and Brown were my reaches. All are awesome, for sort of different reasons. Chicago/Evanston is the best city ... but being in Providence puts you closer to a lot of friends at East Coast colleges, train to Boston and NYC. Ann Arbor inconvenient if you're an out-of-state student because visiting friends is a pain. But we have best sports, really great grad programs, law school, med school which show love to undergrad applicants.

I got rejected from reaches. If I would have gotten into all three, I'd probably be at Brown because of vibe, Ivy League, and proximity to East Coast friends. Northwestern is basically Penn, super pre-professional, but slightly less prestigious.

I was accepted to Vanderbilt, Emory and Umich. I chose umich out of the three because I thought I wanted to get a PhD and that being at a major research university would give me great research opportunities. Umich is a great school, but my decision and thought-process was wrong, especially as a humanities student, and I think ultimately I may have made the wrong decision, but it is what it is.

Visit all of the schools, talk to the students, and then you will be able to get a better feel of what is more worth it to you.

I just have to wonder how you turned down Vandy. That's the one school I will always regret not having applied to.

I'd go Brown > Ross > Northwestern. Brown has a chill af vibe, ivy league prestige, and recruiting on par with Ross. Northwestern is good too, but Ross will offer more opportunities if you want to do something business-related

You sound fairly honest, but I don't think anyone outside of Metro Detroit thinks Ross is more impressive than Northwestern.

Chicago/Evanston >>>>>>>> Ann Arbor/Detroit.

Northwestern's top 10 economics department > Ross.

Econ major from NU is going to get offers before any Ross kid.

Northwestern's new sports complex on the water is insane.

Not a huge diff. but if both offers are in front of you, 9 in 10 are choosing NU.

I didn't say that Ross was more impressive than Northwestern, I said that it offers more business-related opportunities. That is, almost all of the major firms recruit at Ross whereas only a good amount will recruit at Northwestern. The only schools with similar/better recruiting than us are the ivies, Chicago, MIT, Stanford, Duke, and NYU. And in terms of getting an offer, the Ross kid will get them first because the school literally prepares them for jobs.

you make it sound as though every college application takes weeks to complete- notre dame was common app with a few generic supplement questions about what made nd special, i applied because i was midwest and i liked it enough. georgetown was not too difficult even though it wasn't common app, had an interview but hey i applied to a lot of schools on the common app which saved a ton of time. a college app isn't like writing a novel, especially since they open in the summer. i cranked that (and my other apps) out without much trouble... stop applying your own experience to others and understand some people can't afford some schools and thus cannot go (also ross>mendoza or gtown's business school rank so)
