I wasn't just talking about East Coast preps. A lot of houses are mostly in-state prep kids like Cranbrook, Country Day, Liggett, NDP, CC, Rice too...

I went to an east coast prep school not listed above in an area that just generally tends to send way more kids to UVA and UNC and the like than to Michigan; last I checked, I think there were somewhere around 20 kids from my area going here. That said, I was able to talk to a friend in another house about a girl I went to school with as I saw that house as the probable best fit for her, and she did end up with a bid. Do you have to go to particular prep schools to get into the house you want? Probably not. Does having gone to a prep school where everyone knows each other help in terms of having connections? Probably yes.

All going to one of those schools will do is get houses to take a look at you. If you know someone thats in a good house and went to your high school theres a little advantage there but nothing guaranteed

On the flip side, doesn't a fraternity sometimes cut you if you're from a school that is already over-represented in their house? I can see where a frat might not want 20 kids from the same high school and might want to diversify.
