tulane should do a better job

by: hi

How come Tulane doesn't take control of the system and make sure that everybody gets in somewhere? It just seems completely ridiculous. My best friend didn't get a bid and she is insanely beautiful, smart, hard working and the funniest person I know. She didn't do anything against the rules or anything crazy. In fact I would say she is the definition of a sorority girl. Im honestly embarrassed, Tulane does a horrible job of facilitating this process.

The university does not and will not take control over the recruitment/selection process of Greek Organizations. As long as Greek Orgs, are following the policies and guidelines of the University, each Greek Org. will recruit and select their own members they feel fit their particular Org. It's like applying for a job position(s) in a company, some people will be hired for a certain position based on their qualification/ knowledge/ interest and some will not. That is what's call the real world. Remember...NOT everyone attending College is Greek Material. Everyone has the right to rush and seek membership, but it up to the Greek orgs, to select the right people.

How would you know if someone is Greek material or not? Especially if those people didn't even get a chance to see. Im not talking about somebody who dropped by choice.

Tell your friend it’s not the end of the world. College is just four years of your life, and Greek life is just a way to go about it. If your friend is as awesome as you describe she will be fine in life. Greeks and independents find success the same way: by earning it.
Also to the comment above me, shut up with that “not Greek material” crap. Arrogant comments like that are why Greeks get a bad rep.

Im in a sorority now and there is no way you can tell if somebody else is "greek material". After having a conversation for 30 minutes will someone you still don't know anything about them. I just think everybody should get a shot if they want it. Im not talking about people who drop because they didn't get the one they wanted, some people just want the sorority experience. Especially if it was only 7 people who didn't get a bid...there is definitely a way that those 7 girls could have been included in the sorority experience.

Ok first of all - no. This would be absolutely ridiculous. Greek life organizations are private and the school cannot force them to take anyone. At the end of the recruitment process, the school actually does use a program with an algorithm that places “leftover” girls in houses as long as they maximized their options until the very end. That’s how quota is set.

That being said, your friend probably got cut for a reason. You have no idea what she did or how she acted during recruitment. Sometimes girls fall through the cracks, and that’s unfortunate, but the program and the houses do their best to avoid that.

Take this opportunity to introduce your friend to some girls in the house you got a bid from and invite her to certain things if you can. You don’t have to abandon her, but if you’re worried about her making friends and feeling included, do what you can to remedy that.

I have to ask, did your friend optimize her invitations? In other words, did she go back to all the houses who invited her or did she think that some of the houses were "beneath" her? Sometimes when people say they were cut by everybody, they mean they were cut by the one or two houses they would consider joining.

No she was cut from all of them after the first day. She didn't even get a chance to go back
