working while being in a sorority

by:

Hey so I figure being in a sorority will cost about 3k and I want to take part even if it means taking on a job to afford it. Anyone know if thats possible/worth it? What does the 3k pay for anyways?

It is totally doable. I pay for all my dues by myself from my on campus job. I work about less than 15 hours a week and half of my monthly paycheck goes to dues. It's definitely worth it and a lot of girls work and pay their own dues. First year is most expensive, but you are paying for all your events, raids, formals, shirts, and random "gifts". Definitely don't let the cost make you shy away from rushing!

So like 10 hours a week? Which parts of the day are easiest to work where there aren't any sorority activities happening? Also if greek life is really time consuming do you recommend working at all

It's like 3500 for the first year alone. A job won't cut it hun

You can definitely make that much working part time for a year. A part time job should work if you and you'll be fine

Strictly dues speaking, my house was definitely not 3500 for the first year. It's a matter of how many extra fees you want to pay for certain shirts or events, or even just going out with your sisters. I'm not sure about other houses, but my house has payment plan available if you can't pay for it all up front. Be sure to ask about it during rush!

That being said, I don't know a ton of girls who work to pay for their sorority. During rush, all the houses said lots of girls do it, but I think that's just a bit of a white lie told during recruitment to get you to go Greek. It's possible, but it's a lot of work. Remember that being in a sorority will take up a lot of your time to begin with, so adding a job on top of that, especially if you're working a lot, won't give you much time for anything else. It's possible, but I think there are better ways to spend your college years than stressed out working all the time trying to make dues.

And to answer your last question, dues go to the upkeep of the house, food, the cooking staff's salary, your house mom's salary, and allowances to your social, philanthropy, sisterhood, academic, recruitment, etc chairs so they can put on events for you. There is also a smaller fee that goes to your sorority's national headquarters. During your first quarter, you will have some additional charges for things like your pin (mine was around $250). Picking up a little in the future will also cost extra.

Interesting perspectives...if you dont mind me asking how much did your first year cost? I'm still on the fence

Its variable. Minimum first year is 2k but unlikely to see anything under 2800 lowest. That doesn't include gifts, extra shirts, clothing you will buy for events etc. If you think it will be a problem I would look into other clubs on campus. Other ways to be involved. The $ will stress you out because there will always be more to pay for. More $$, dinners out, spring break trips. You will feel very constrained by lack of finances. I would say rush anyway but if you know already that you cannot commit 3k then it probably won't be worth it. Good luck

You gain so much being greek during your collegiate years and long after you've graduated with your alum connections. 100% worth it every time for any chapter. The bigger it is nationally the better the post grad life as well.

That sounds great! Sorry for the questions I just have a lot of reservations especially since I'm a junior transfer, I hope being an upperclassman won't limit my chances at ending up somewhere where I fit in due to class standing

It will to an extent but UCLA has upperclassmen quota which is very helpful to non-freshman. Most schools do not have separate quotas based on class standing. I wouldn't worry about it.
