sorority legacies

by: Legacy or Nah

If my aunt was in a sorority at Purdue does that still make me a legacy with the potential to receive an automatic bid? Or does it have to be a mother or sister?

No- technically you are not a legacy. Legacies are mother, step mother, grandma, great grandma, step grandma, daughter, sister or step sister. Aunts unfortunately do not count. And, do not depend on a rec letter either. Not sure why those exist because they’re worthless. If anything, it MIGHT get you invited back for 2 Nd round only, after that- no guarantees. You may get cut after the 1st rd with a rev too-

You would not be considered a legacy! Also being a legacy does NOT equal an automatic bid. Normally if you are a legacy, houses are highly encouraged to invite you back for the 2nd round (1st invite) but after that they don’t have to/aren’t highly encouraged to invite a legacy back for the 3rd round (2nd invite) or 4th round (pref round) vs a non legacy. For some/most houses however, if you’re a legacy and you were invited to pref round at that house, they then have to give you a bid.

@PU - sorry. Just because a pnm’s name gets thrown around because of a rec letter STILL means nothing! Pnm’s are thinking they may have a better chance bc of it, and that’s just plain FALSE.

Do not get their hopes up with rec letters. Their useless. If a sorority uses them, then rush chairs, rush committee members
and President s should be going to those girls and introducing themselves. But most never do. \n\n\n\n\n

They they both said it pretty well, but to add on it also depends on the sorority. Each house has a different set of rules regarding legacies. So just keep that in mind if you wanna find out those rules.

Regardless—get RECOMMENDATIONS, for every house if possible. No, they don’t guarantee a bid, but they get your name out there early and show the groups you were interested enough to ask an alum to speak up for you.

Actually AXiD does count nieces as legacies. Anyway, every pnm who thinks she's a legacy needs to check the national legacy policy of the sorority in question to find out for sure and make it known to that house. Some nationals have legacy intro forms for that purpose. Your connection doesn't have to be from a Purdue chapter for you to be considered a legacy, it's at the national level for every sorority. But every legacy policy is different; for example XO does not count granddaughters, only daughters and sisters, and some sororities count great-granddaughters. Find out where you stand because it can give you some extra consideration.
