Sororities for A Junior Transfer

by:

Hi, I’m an incoming Junior transfer student from another university. I’m interested in Greek life but don’t know if it’s too late for me to join.
What is the likelihood of me getting a bid from a sorority?
Which sororities typically have space or offer bids to upperclassmen?
Is it better for me to just not rush since I’ll be a Junior?
Thank you!

hey, i transferred in and rushed as an upperclassman too. a lot of the chapters won’t even consider u, so expect to get dropped from a bunch of them after the first day. pi phi takes sophomores and has taken juniors in the past, and axo and phi mu will take sophomores. if u know people in the chapter u have got a better shot. good luck ! if u want to join greek life u should totally rush and try it out.

There was previously an upperclassman quota - each house had to take at least “X” upperclassmen. Does that still exist?

There is not that any longer, and that's not how an upperclassmen quota works anyway. Quota isn't 'have to take' a certain number, it's an upper limit, just like for freshmen, that no chapter can go over. Can't believe you're an 'alum' and never learned that.

Maybe quota wasn’t the right word but when I was there, there were a certain number of spots reserved for upperclassmen. I was a gamma chi so I’m pretty sure I’m remembering it correctly but no need to be rude lol

The 'reserved spots' for upperclassmen never HAD to be filled, it was an option for a chapter only if they liked someone enough. It was a courtesy to upperclassmen so that the chapter didn't have to worry about using a precious quota spot. But it wasn't a HAVE TO either; no chapter was or can be forced to offer a bid like that. Can't believe you were a 'gamma chi' and never learned that LOL

I thought ALL sororities take sophomores. I get why most don’t take juniors … but you’re making it sound like it’s rare for sophomores to get bids. Am I wrong about that?

100% rush if its something you're interested in, definitely worth it even just for the experience. Just be aware that a lot of chapters will drop you for no other reason other than its more financially advantageous for them to take a freshman who will pay dues for 4 years over a junior who will pay for only 2 years.

Ok so most will drop me because I’m a junior transfer from a university.
Who is left that MAYBE might invite me back to round 2 ?
And do I need letters of recommendation? ?

maybe phi mu or pi phi? I would just keep your options open bc you’re def right, most sororities won’t take a junior for financial reasons!

I don’t want to sound negative but the likelihood of you getting a bid from most of the chapters is relatively low but not impossible. If you’re up for it, definitely give rush a shot but don’t go in thinking you will for sure get a bid. UNC has so many other clubs and things that can get you the same experience as a sorority.

So do you think I should even rush or just try COB ?

you might as well try formal recruitment, give it a shot you never know! you might limit yourself even more with cob
