R.I.P. GREEK LIFE

by: SAD!!!!

To my fellow Greek Brothers and Sisters......

Today, it was announced that Bloomsburg University has terminated their fraternity and sorority programs effective immediately. The University has cut ties with all national and local fraternities and sororities.

Back at the beginning of the spring term, the University put out a statement stating that due to the plethora of risk management issues, students injured and deaths and hazing, that they were giving Greek Life organizations one last opportunity to get their stuff together. They stated that if any fraternity or sorority broke rules (Hazing, risk management, etc,) and were found responsible, the entire Greek System would be shut down.

Unfortunately this past weekend, a member of Phi Sigma Sigma sorority passed away after falling down steps at a suspended fraternity's party, and today it was announced Greek Life is over at Bloomsburg.

Well it was fun while it lasted. Now with the removal of Greek Life and the school being part of the Northern Region merger, I thinks it time to transfer out. I hear Greek Life at Colleges/Universities in the south are doing very well.

The Schools in the South (ACC & SEC) have very strong Greek Life and very loyal Alumni that are totally involved with the Greek Community.

While schools in the South (ACC &SEC) have strong Greek Life, be prepared to pay anywhere from 10 to 30 times what you paid in dues at Bloomsburg. Also, Greek Life in the south is in no way comparable to Greek Life at Bloomsburg. It's competitive - VERY competitive - and if you don't know people at that school, your chances of joining a top tier house are close to zero.

We go independent like several other greek systems. Believe me, our nationals cant afford to lose our chapters. Lets contact Fraternity Forward Coalition

Many nationals do not like independent councils because that means that every IHQ will have the added responsibility to monitor those chapters more closely for risk management without the school's assistance. Some IHG may not have the staff to devote time into this unless every fraternity and sorority recruits at least one alumnus/ alumnae to assist with oversight.

If your national wants to have a chapter on a campus, they should be willing to provide the support and monitoring necessary to ensure the safety of students. No national fraternity or sorority should be leaving chapters out there on their own. National organizations understand that they will incur the liability of the chapter, regardless of if they are providing support or not, and as such, will elect to do so. And sadly, ever chapter should have alumni volunteers to advise them on GOOD practices in Greek Life. This isn't new. It's been around for many years.

Nationals don't like having "ROGUE" Chapters. There is no oversight without University recognition and it becomes hard to monitor those chapters, which means they have to actively recruit more local Alumni to assist.

the shutdown has nothing to do with phi sig. Leah passed from a ruptured aorta…it was a complete freak accident and she would have passed away anywhere that she was that night. unfortunately, we had the school and people like you who are blaming phi sig for her death when it was unpreventable. greek life was targeted and shut down solely because Leah was affiliated with a greek org…despite the fact that her death was not related to one and was simply a freak accident. she was a ticking timebomb…
