dropped from top house, snap bid?

by: pnm

Im a pnm that was dropped from the houses I had remaining that I loved today. I asked my rho gamma about snap bids and she sad that absolutely does not happen at smu, yet i’ve heard so many rumors about. Do snap bids happen here?

No. Maybe one house will have one but it’s rare, only exception is sometimes GPhi does but even they haven’t done it the past two years.

Does no one remember a few years ago Theta giving out a ton of snap bids because they messed up their list? Snap bids have happened in every house on SMU, tier doesn't matter. Snap bids usually mean someone really messed up with the list or a sorority got zealous during cutting and overconfident in the girls they would get back. It's rare but it does happen.

Its definitely not something to count on though. If you count on a snap bid happening to get into a house you really want, you may as well start playing the lottery too because you'd have to get incredibly incredibly lucky.

Sororities don't get zealous in cutting. We are told by Panhellenic how many must be cut each round. That's all based on historic return rates. It's all automated.

Also, that never happened to theta. Try talking about something you actually know about instead of a malicious rumor.

Yes snap bids do happen. Just not that common

The only houses that give out “snap bids” are the bottom two, sometimes dg. Top houses NEVER do that... don’t count on it.

@rush You don’t know what you are talking about. Snaps have very little to do with tiers.
COB is more prevalent in mid/lower tiers and not the same as snaps

Theta did this year. So much for your vitriolic (and ubiquitous) posts.

If the houses released you, you would likely not be on their snap bid list if they were to miss quota. Many houses have a “once cut, always cut” rule. They’ve already decided you’re not a good fit for their sisterhood. I’m sorry, but if you have houses left, you need to treat them like they’re the only sororities on campus because they’re your only chance to go Greek.

Our point exactly. Only at SMU Freshmen recruitment takes up 2 semesters. Freshmen recruitment begins in the Fall semester and completes after the second week of classes in the second Spring semester.

Freshmen only learn of their finalist on pref day, after the first week of classes during the second Spring semester. After learning of their final bid options, freshmen were given 3 short days to drop all classes and move out of their dorm or face a 50% refund cut to their fees paid in advance to the university.

Very few freshmen drop from the university after their first semester because they are given false hopes, encouragement and often verbal bids from sororities 1-6. Then in late January, reality hits at pref day. Over 200 ladies shunned from the sororities that told them they would be a great fit for their sorority.

An unnecessarily mean, hostile process for SMU's best and brightest.

One time, at band camp, I was ineligible to play the tuba bacause my shoulders weren’t broad enough. Over 200 beautiful tuba players transferred because of their narrow shoulders or were forced to pursue lesser instruments.

Somebody shut up the girl that posts on every thread about the unfairness that she didn't get a bid from her first choice house and only got bids from the two lowest houses and SHE'S MUCH TOO GOOD FOR THEM! All our houses are good and people who get a bid from any house will have a wonderful experience!

Multiple houses gave out snap bids this year. As the first comment states, it has nothing to do with tier, just the way that cuts worked out. However, snap bids happen directly after the houses receive their original list. Now it is only COB which only the lower houses do.

If those 250+ (it used to be 200) so high quality powerful ladies decided to join the bottom two sororities instead of transferring, wouldn't those two sororities be the most amazing on campus?

Should I not rush as a sophomore if once cut always cut? I’m one of the PNM’s that ended up with my last house on my list and I dropped because it truly wasn’t a good fit for me
It would help if someone could say what you’re really looking for.
I had a very full resume and a successful 1st semester and my rush didn’t match my outcome. Not willing to give up though!
And do that many girls really leave?

You most likely are an amazing person and at SMU most of the cuts during rush aren’t because they don’t like you, but mostly because you didn’t have an advocate in the house already. You have to try and think with around 50-60 spots per pledge class even if every girl already in the sorority has one girl they love and want to join, they still have to cut half of those already beloved girls purely because there is not enough room.

So next year you can do a couple of things. I’m now a senior and the house I wanted freshman year dropped me on pref, so I dropped out of rush as did my roommate. We both spent the rest of freshman year and beginning of sophomore year hanging out with our friends who were in sororities and just authentically meeting their sisters and making friends. We both rerushed as sophomores and she ended up getting in our friends house when I didn’t. That being said I’m still friends with all of them and the behind the scenes of rush is crazier than freshman think. For example a house might love 20 sophomores, but if they can only take 10, hard cuts have to be made. The easiest cut is by GPA so make sure you have yours as high as possible.

That being said I had one house left in rush that I really didn’t think I fit in with, but decided to give it a shot since I didn’t have anything to loose. I’ve ended up having a great experience and now only wished I had joined sooner. No sorority is perfect and from my experience a sorority is honestly what you make of it. For example, I go out a lot more than most of my sisters, but we live in the heart of Dallas so when there’s not a mixer I just grab some other friends and go to Uptown. But it’s nice that when I need a study buddy I always have a sorority sister who wants to help, and more importantly girls who I can hang out and feel comfortable with when alcohol isn’t involved. Lastly, at a school like SMU when you see everyone participating in homecoming and going to formals, not being in a sorority really sucks.

So I say rerush next year and give it a shot, it never hurts in life to try.
Also no, very few people transfer out of SMU, and the ones that do leave for more important reasons then not getting their preferred house in rush. Don’t let the troll scare you.

This narrative makes it seem like there is some predetermined number of 'spots' available in each house before rush starts. This is not how it works. Quota is not determined until after the pref round and is based on the total number of pnm's turning in MRABA cards. And if every pnm at pref in a house they think they don't fit in would just look around at the other pnm's there, they would see an amazing group of beautiful, fun, sweet, smart women who would make up that new member class if they would just give that house a chance. Listen to @Friends: "I’ve ended up having a great experience and now only wished I had joined sooner. No sorority is perfect and from my experience a sorority is honestly what you make of it."
