diversity in rush

Several people have commented on diversity in rush at Alabama. There are several facts that they need to be aware of.
1. Alabama is a public University that receives a ton of federal and state money, and would not exist without it.
2. A few years ago the administration at the University mandated to the sororities that they had to diversify or face a fine.
3. Several sororities paid the fine for the first year or two, not sure if they are still doing it or not.
4. The progressive sororities, including some big ones, realized that this was going to happen and decided to take the best pledge class possible, regardless of race, creed, of color.
5. At SMU, being a private University, it would probably be up to the administration to facilitate this action.

At Alabama the chapter alumnae were a big part of the problem. The actives were ready to accept women of color, especially some that really stood out and certain chapters really wanted. But the sorority alumnae weren't having it so the actives who were pushing for change got shut down. The university stepped in at that point. SMU administration should not have to step in and if more WOC went through recruitment here there would be more in the sororities.

That is true! A BIG difference at SMU is second semester rush, which should let everyone get to know you and make a decision on who you are and not what race you are! Although the alumnae at SMU still have a huge say in what happens. The administration sure stepped in this past fall on this issue and they had no clue!
