how many freshman girls usually don't get bids?
also, is it true that sometimes girls don't get bids because of a computer error?

Girls getting released because of a computer glitch is a myth. It keeps being said because its easier to blame a computer then to say "I was dropped by all the sororities". There are also no computer glitches when you do get a bid - but not to the sorority you listed first.
The one way not to get a bid is not to go through recruitment. The number of girls who get dropped by all the sororities is really really low (less than 50 last year). There are plenty of girls who drop out because they didn't like who they were invited back by.
