Could SigEp be the next domino to fall in the war on Greeks?

Lots of the questions are around how SigEp's leadership in adopting requirements for substance free chapter housing will impact the chapter experience. The honest answer is that it shouldn’t change much. The purpose of a SigEp chapter is to find men who share our Fraternity’s principles and to develop them into a Balanced Man® who will be the next generation of values-based leaders. Drinking in the chapter facility really plays no role in that mission, and frankly, data from higher education researchers (GreekLifeEdu and AlcoholEdu for College® to name a few) shows that it actively works against a chapter’s ability to do so. Many SigEp chapters have already implemented substance-free facility policies and are thriving on campuses across the country.

The Balanced Man Program is hardly a program - don’t let the name fool you. It’s synonymous with tradition; It’s synonymous with lifestyle. It’s a way of being, surviving, and excelling as better, “balanced” men through an ever-changing, dynamic society. We bond with beliefs - those strong enough to outweigh the temptations of alcohol. Through establishing connections as brothers and as lifelong friends upon accepting bids from our fraternity, new members are able to receive adequate resources from their very first day. It’s family - plain and simple. And “Mentoring” is just one of the five pillars of our philosophy; the other four are love, sobriety, sobriety, and real estate. It’s a hands-on, real-world leadership and professional skills development experience. One that builds balance. Balance in life, balance in leisure, balance as men. This is The Balanced Man Program.

I wouldn't call it a family after it just got rid of the majority of its members.

The 5 pillars are mentoring, love, sobriety, sobriety, and real estate?

They not going to last much longer. This new Balanced Man Program isn't working out that well for other Sig EP chapters that were forced to use it. Many of them either surrendered their charters, went underground as a local or merged with another fraternity.

There's a alumni clique that ruined everything by demanding a membership purge. The "leadership style" is basically what a Dartmouth fraternity would look like with a charter from Pyongyang.

What that tells me is that we have a chapter who thinks it is too smart, too cool, too whatever, for the rest of us. That they are special. I don't mourn their decision to quit. It really is a process of self selection. Maybe someday, if we see fit, we can return to the Dartmouth and build a chapter with brothers who truly believe in our cardinal principles above all else.
