formal rush as a sophomore

My mom was in a sorority (Sigma Kappa) and told me to wait a year before rushing, so I'm planning on doing formal in the Fall. How does being a sophomore affect that?

If you can I would rush as a freshman! I think it's personally way nicer to have all girls your age in your PC and you don't get the full experience if you miss freshman year
