is it true that betas only bid rich kids?

If it is true, how do they know you are rich or not (like by appearance)? I know that some old row fraternities in the south give bids based on rushee's families net worth (some even require students rushing to bring their families tax returns to rush). I assume betas don't do things like this?

No you don't need to be rich to rush anywhere. I know plenty of betas who are definitely not considered rich. However, they do probably have more wealthy kids than most of the houses on campus and many of their alumni are apparently pretty wealthy

They can also ferret it out by asking questions about where you're from or what your parents do.

Also they look at what you're wearing as well as having expensive fees.

Betas also have a lot of guys that are athletic but not particularly rich
