Question about "suiciding" after pref

by: Q

Let's say a girl has gone through rush, open minded, after meeting everyone had a list of lots of sororities she would be glad to join, but by prefs, her two choices left are one she would love to join and one she really has no interest in joining. I have heard that you get "penalized" somehow if you just list the one you are interested in and don't put the second one on your bid card. How does this work? Does the girl get pushed further down in the rankings for her #1 choice because she didn't list the 2nd choice? In terms of getting a bid from the #1 choice, does it matter whether the girl lists a #2 choice, or only lists the #1?

You don’t get “penalized” for for suiciding bidding, that’s a myth!! It’s doesn’t change your placement on desired bid lists, it just overall will make you less likely to end up in any sorority.

This isn’t exactly how it works and it’s complicated so I’ll break it down into a couple scenarios, but essentially, sororities will have two “bid lists” after pref. The first list is their ideal PC, the second list is girls they would still extend bids to.

If you rank them number 1 and they have you on the first list, you get a bid.

If you rank them 1, but they have you on the second list, the sorority will first go through its entire first list and see if they can match everyone like the above scenario (they both rank each other first)

If they have another girl on their first list who gets matched in this way to another sorority, the next girl they would want from their second list is now added to their first list and they keep going through like this. So in the scenario where you ranked them 1 but they had you on the second list, you could be pulled up to the first list and still join your number 1.

If your number 1 fills their pledge class before getting to you, two things can happen:
1) Your number 2 still has space in their pledge and you join them
2) Both pledge classes are full - but you still get a bid! Here is where the difference from suicide bidding comes in. In the case where you put both choices down, even though both pledge classes are full, you still get to join one! I’m not sure how exactly they decide which one you join. BUT if you suicide bid and the sorority you put down fills their pledge class before getting to you, you are dropped and get no bid

Summary:
If you don’t suicide bid, you are guaranteed a bid at one of your options
If you do suicide bid, there is a possibility that you will not get a bid

So to answer your last question:

“In terms of getting a bid from the #1 choice, does it matter whether the girl lists a #2 choice, or only lists the #1?”

Yes it does matter. If you list both choices and both fill up their pledge classes before getting to you, there is still a possibility of joining your first option. If you suicide bid and your first choice fills up their pledge class before getting to you, you don’t get that extra chance

There is actually no first bid list and second bid list any longer. That is from an old, old, system before RFM and Quota Additions, and is how pnm's used to end up without a bid at all, for being 'cross cut' due to two bid lists. It actually predates the bid matching process being computerized. It does not apply any longer. There is only one ranked bid list of all pnm's the sorority preffed.

Exactly, if you suicide bid you are not eligible to be a "quota addition" to your first choice because you didn't put two options down.

So, it seems like if the girl really has NO interest in the second choice (was open minded and loved lots of houses, but not the only other one remaining as second choice), she should still rank them 2nd. and then if she doesn't get matched for an initial bid from #1 choice, it is a gamble and she hopes that #2's class is full and that she gets added as a quota addition to #1. If I understood all of that correctly. The risk being, she gets matched to #2 and really has no interest in that one.

and you can always drop if you give house #2 a chance and don't like it. Just means you can't rush again until next Spring.

It depends… If you really would rather be in NO house than your second house, it may be best to suicide bid. If you put both names down, get the second house and reject them, then you aren’t eligible for any COBs and have to wait until next year to rush again.

If the house you want is popular, COBs are going to be unlikely so this isn’t a great bet. Of course there’s also the possibility that a more “middle” house would do COBs that you would prefer over your second choice. (I hate calling it middle, but you get what I mean).

Your best chance at a COB would be if you have friends join or who are already in that house. Even then, it’s a risk your taking and it’s up to each individual

I wonder how often it works out that girls don't get their first choice. I think the way it works is that they really do try to give you the top choice. Anyone have experiences with this?

The bid matching process takes the pnm's ranks into account much more than in other rounds. Bid matching starts at the top of a chapter's ranked bid list with the algorithm going down and matching with the pnm's who put that house down as #1. If you are high enough on your #1's ranked list to match with them before they reach quota then you will get that bid. If they reach quota before you match with them, the algorithm will then try to match you to your #2 house in the same way. If you are high enough on their list to match with them before they reach quota, you will get their bid. If you are not high enough to match with them either, the algorithm will place you with either as a quota addition. The algorithm will try to give you to your #1. But if you have two pref houses and only rank one, and you are not high enough to match with them before they reach quota, you are then out of the process and will not receive a bid. So you can see that the chapters don't automatically get everyone they want from their list, the pnm's choices actually carry some weight at this point. Statistically, 85% of pnm's get their first choice, and sometimes this stat is as high as 95%.

Best advice is to let the girls know at your #1 choice that you really want to be there and be honest and let the #2 choice know that you’re leaning towards another sorority.

By: Yep
by: ^^Don't do that

No no no. Telling the #2 house you are leaning elsewhere won't do one single thing to get you higher on your #1's list. You may still end up in #2 and be THAT GIRL. Focus your efforts on your #1.

I disagree. Telling your 2 you’re leaning towards another house or unsure would probably make them less likely to put you on their first bid list so there’s a chance you could be a quota addition to your 1?

There aren't two bid lists, there's just one ranked one.

So the Aphi I had today told me to tell the other sorority I pref that I don’t want them…. That way they will put me low on their second list…. And way if I don’t make it to Aphis first bid list, I’ll still be matched with them…/

Is that true?

You actually want Aphi? Girl it’s not gonna be hard to get a bid there, don’t panic.

Leave it to Aphi. Honestly they had to do snap bids last bid day so if you truly want to go there, you’ll have no trouble.
