Sorority Recruitment
by: RFM expertYou want insight? Here you go - Sororities do the choosing of the new members. The computer does not get anything wrong. People who do not understand the process clearly are the ones who try to find reasons why things did not work out as they wanted. Here is the process explained:

#1 The voting processes in each individual chapter have not changed as far as how they decide their bid lists. Each chapter makes two lists: the 1st bid list is their ideal NM class, their tip top choices equaling to quota, and the 2nd bid list ranks all the other girls who attended their preferential parties from most favored on down. Each chapter has their own process for making these decisions and uses different methods, which is up to them. All houses' lists are then submitted for computer matching with the PNM’s ranks of houses. The algorithm matches the bid list names to the PNM's choices like this:

#2 A sorority's 1st bid list of PNM's matches with all the PNM's on that list who put that house first. Remember that the number of names on the 1st bid list is equal to quota. When a PNM is matched, that’s one down for that sorority and her name is then removed from all other houses' bid lists because she is now unavailable. Any houses who had her on their 1st bid list must now go to their 2nd bid list to move the next girl in rank up, so each house is working from a 1st bid list that equals quota.

This goes around again, matching sorority 1st bid lists to PNM’s first choices and moving up girls from their 2nd lists as girls are matched. Pass after pass is made, always working to the ever-changing 1st bid list of quota.

As each chapter reaches quota, they are done and drop out of the process. The remaining chapters continue on the same way until they too reach quota and are all done. The matching process is complete when all chapters either reach quota or finally exhaust their bid lists.

PNM’s who were invited to only one preferential party and attended are guaranteed a bid to that house.

#3 This is how a PNM does not get her first choice: her number one reached quota before they got to her on their ranked list. So she is then matched with her number two choice when she comes up on their 1st bid list. This is how a PNM does not get a bid at all: if she chooses to not list her second choice and her only choice reaches quota before they get to her, she then has no other options and is out of the running for a bid. This is called SIP, or suiciding, and also leaves that PNM ineligible to be a quota addition.

This now brings us to quota additions and snap bids:

Any girls who are still unmatched at the end of this process, if they maximized their options, are matched as quota additions, meaning that they are matched with one of their ranked houses even though it would put that house over quota, hence a quota addition. Usually the PNM’s first choice house is matched but not always depending on relative chapter sizes and keeping equity among the chapters. Maximized options means that a PNM accepted all invitations throughout the week and ranked all houses, and did not SIP after preferentials.

#5 Snap bids: Any chapter that is still not at quota after matching may snap bid girls who did not attend any parties in the preferential round. Chapters may snap up to quota if they can/wish. Snap bids are only given before bids go out. Snap bid girls run to their homes with everyone else and no one should know who got snapped unless she tells people. Which she should not.

Spot are only determined at pref. The number of PNM's going to the pref round divided by the number of houses is quota. Some houses will take more due to quota additions, which ensure that every PNM who attends the pref round and ranks each house where she attends is guaranteed a bid. This is called "maximizing your options." This is the way it works on every college campus and on every college campus girls are disappointed when they don't get what they think they deserve. The vast majority of PNM's here who do not get a 'spot' is because they drop out. They only want a certain house or two and will not consider any other options, despite actually being wanted at other houses. The difference at UVA is in the entitled attitude. If 1000 PNM's registered and stayed the course, only a few would be completely dropped and new member classes would be at least 60 instead of 45.

So I transferred for financial reasons and at my new school they have some weird rules.
1. before prefs they only let you say which are your top two houses and then you select two alternates. Then if you don’t get both of your top two THEY pick FOR YOU which of your alternate two you pref. This seems so against girls choices counting first. Like if you really love one of your alternates it doesn’t matter.
2. If you drop out of rush or suicide you can still get a snap bid.
So. Much. Gaming.
Why are they allowed to do things differently than other schools ?

But also PNM's who were invited to more than one pref and put both all of them down on their cards are, too, guaranteed a bid from one of those houses, even if it puts a house over quota. Not their first choice, but a bid from one of them guaranteed. This is called Quota Plus. So it's not just if a PNM was invited to only one pref.
