kids who were popular in highschool need to cling to some sort of hierarchy to validate themselves. Other kids who are also insecure in 'lower-tier' houses subscribe to the hierarchy in the desperate belief they can raise themselves up and gain social approval and respect. Overall, people feel the need to have someone socially below themselves in order to feel good about themselves. Although there is a vocal push back against the idea of ranking along the lines that it is rude and disingenuous, the vast majority of people in greek life just enjoy being able to think 'I'm in XYZ I'm the best' or 'I may be in ZYX and we're not at the top but at least I'm not in QW.'

Totally. A big reason why we are seeing the emergence of the Big 5. High mid tier srats couldn't handle being mid and had to weasel their ways into top tier. It's all ridiculous
