Why do most sororitys have house moms? Do they add value or not?

The brothel thing is just an old, old rumor that somehow persists on lots of campuses across the country. Sorority chapters' house moms, whose actual position is called House Director, are live-in paid managers who see to the running of the house. They oversee the cleaning and maintenance, meal plans, safety and security, and adherence to house rules. They can sometimes act as an ear to listen or shoulder to cry on, and just be there for the members. Having a 'house mom' also helps bring down the liability cost a little too. Almost all fraternities used to have them as well, but the position kind of died out during the seventies when Greek life hit a big slump, and they never seemed to return. There are some fraternities on other campuses who do have house moms though, and appreciate them no end.
