by: hello there.

Had a bad first semester, and hoped rushing would help me find my group. . . turns out rush at UVA is definitely unfair compared to my friends at Ole Miss and Alabama. Is anyone else considering leaving? BYE UVA!!!!!!

What's the difference between rush here and at Ole Miss and UA? IF anything, ours is more open where theirs are all about certain prep schools, church camps, zip codes, and legacies.

Not really one for greek rank but my boyfriend is leaving uva because he didnt get a fraternity. Felt like it actually was based on where we live... we are out of state and since he didn't know anyone (seriously we live 8 hours away) he didn't get a bid. No big deal, but it is probably true in some aspect that y'all also low key rush based on zip codes. I go to an sec school and yalls rush seemed to care so much more on where you live and who u know....

We are from metro Atlanta area- basically if you didn't go to a private school in ATL you are irrelevant. Sure OOS people get bids but it's exclusive as anything and way weirder/ pickier than fraternities at my sec school.

Have you considered that your boyfriend might have some responsibility for his not getting a bid anywhere? Maybe he didn't do rush well.

i'm the OP, and I can definitely tell you rush is more unfair here than it is at Ole mIss and AU. For starters....you don't just have 25 minutes to "get to know" a sister. and They actually give you standards for dress, etc. So girls don't go in overdressed/underdressed. AU/Ole Miss actually account for recs etc.
I can tell you a list of reasons etc. My Ole Miss friends were shocked when I told them how UVA does it.

By: OP
by: minnFeb 17, 2017 3:07:55 PM

How relevant were the rec letters? Were they from UVa alumna who knew you, or were they actually kind of a stretch?

By: minn

by: @minnFeb 17, 2017 7:20:37 PM

how can someone get letters from UVA alumna of every house... that's just impossible

By: @minn
Report
by: minnFeb 17, 2017 7:30:04 PM

Of course that'd be impossible and probably not even smart to use if you did have them.

But letters from alumna of the chapters you were particularly interested in -- that's possible and might have helped. Certainly wouldn't have hurt.

Just don't believe this. One of my best friends is at Ole Miss and their rush is 100% more "unfair" than UVA. They have fewer houses and more pnms rushing. You have to have a rec to every house, preferably from an Ole Miss alum. And on top of it they started a new system in fall 2016 where the amount of quota you have is based on rate of return. IOW the top houses took fewer pledges than the bottom houses. They had like 1600 pnms to rush, and the top 3 houses were made to cut 1000 pnms btwm Round 1 and Round 2. Their rush is also in the middle of the semester.
So sorry you had a rough rush, but UVA's rush just isn't as "unfair" as Ole Miss, or Alabama.

Why don't the whiners just join a sorority already? Several are doing COB and still filling open spots.

The post by @freedom about not wanting to join sorority because of what other people think -- well, maybe this is all working out as it should, and you didn't find a spot because you were looking for status where other PNMs were looking for sisterhood.

SSS and SDT are the sororitys of last resort. Girls who join got dropped from everywhere else so when you join one of these you're basically telling the world you're a loser. Harsh but true.

But I thought you said you were a quality PNM who got dropped everywhere else but SDT and SSS. Therefore even these sororitys have access to quality PNMs like you and have quality PNMs that become sisters.

What you're failing to admit is that you care more about status than sisterhood.

No. Because neither house felt like home. Tri sig has some sweet girls but they're almost too nice, to the point of being boring. I just didn't find them very interesting. I think SDT has a great sisterhood andI found the girls cool and interesting but we didn't have a lot in common. It felt too much like work to be there.

I hate to say it, but there are reasons they are bottom tier. It's not just a status thing.

You write that Ole Miss doesn't dirty rush and that is just not true. I go to Ole Miss. The top sororities here comprise most of their pledge classes via dirty rushing and their alumnae dictating their new members. It's really not a fair way of building a chapter at all.

Rush at Ole Miss is absolutely done by who you know. The "lower tier" houses are full of OOS girls without Ole Miss connections who would be top tier in their home states. And houses at both schools dirty rush all the time. Greek life at Bama and Ole Miss are the best in the country.

For the love of God, do not transfer from UVA to Ole Miss. I've been at both. UVA offers a top education that will open doors for you. Your classmates are diverse and some of the best students in the country. Please believe me when I say that your education at Virginia will benefit you for the rest of your life.

by: Wrong, Wrong, WrongMar 2, 2017 2:34:31 PM

Keep telling yourself that about the "education" at UVA. In reality, you better have a great work ethic, references, and internships.NO ONE cares what college you have graduated from UNLESS it is IVY and UVA is NOT Ivy. Get a reality check! It's a state school that only those who attend think is that awesome.

Girls are shamed for not joining bottom sororitys because of "status" yet here you're saying stay at UVA because of status. You can get a good education at most schools but the UVA name gets you through the door. Same for sororitys, top sororitys will open doors for you. Bottom sororitys won't.

Rush at any SEC school is completely different than UVA. Especially for Alabama and Ole Miss. Recruitment is taken very seriously in the south and each sorority has the option to pick the best girls because there really is no "bottom" sorority. A bottom sorority at UA or Ole Miss would be a top sorority anywhere else in the country, therefore mainly qualified girls are the ones rushing- best grades, prettiest girls, wealthy, involved, etc because it's so competitive. So girls that don't think they have a chance because they are lacking in a category, don't bother so it makes the pool of girls rushing APPEAR like their process is easier but I promise you it is not. UVA has great Greek life and any one would be lucky to be apart of it, however if you were unsuccessful with rush at UVA then you would not make it far through rush at Ole Miss (#1 Greek Life in the country) or Alabama (#2 Greek Life in the country)

You are CONTRADICTING yourself.

Get over your lack of success at UVa sorority rush. You think you're too good for a bottom sorority and would rather be a GDI.

UVA Greek life is not true Greek Life. Greek Life at other colleges are more organized and more inclusive. And they actually have real Greek activities. And they value LOOKS and APPEARANCE unlike UVA. You should leave and you will find Greek life much better than UVA. Take it from someone who has a sister in a sorority in UVA and I am in a sorority ANOTHER school that has a very strong Greek Life. It's great. UVA is just SAD!

Isn't this the point of going to this school, you know, for school? I get the importance of Greek life and it helping you feel welcome and connected to others. But this is ridiculous! You're really going to transfer because you didn't get into the best sorority? It sounds like sour grapes to me, focus on joining other clubs and activities and just re rush again if it means that much. UVA is an amazing school that so many people would love to go to, and you're so worried about sororities rather than being happy with the school you're in. This is ridiculous

agree with @Why. 3rd and 4th years stop going to frats b/c they just go to bars mostly at that point. if 2/3 of uva can live without being in greek life, maybe there are other things to do on grounds. just a thought.
