recruitment for sororitys
by: cavalierHow do the top tier sororitys like kappa, theta, tri delt recruit new members? Is it mostly based on who you know or where you're from? Do you need to be in GL to have fun?

Yes, but it is extremely difficult without connections. Most of them select their pledge classes in advance through dirty rushing. To some degree, most sororities do this, but for the top tiers(esp kappa/theta) no contacts make it especially difficult. It is possible for tridelt and even more so for pi phi because I know girls in both who had 0 contacts going in and it worked out fine. Just hard to do.

These girls have moved in the same social circles for years whether it's through the same schools, summer camps, vacation spots, sports teams, internships or european trips. If you can talk their talk then you'll fit in. You don't want to be part of their circle if you don't.
Dirty rushing goes on in all sororities to some degree. People know people from their home town.

Came from completely random northeast town, ended up in top tier sorority. Genuinely think the girls are more cool and fun. Not knowing people is no biggie as long as you make a point of meeting girls over the course of first semester via rush dates w your friends who might know someone.

The original question was about how top tiers recruit and I understand Theta and Kappa pick girls they know or have a lot of money. But what about the other top tiers like Pi Phi, Tri Delt, Aphi and DG? Is it looks? Grades? Involvement? I would appreciate some practcal advice on how to best approach the process. If I don't know anyone in these sororitys what is the best way to meet them? Thanks!

I find it amusing to see the argument against top tier sororities and using them as for networking and contacts in the future.
If using contacts is what gets you into a top tier sorority in the first place, wouldn't that naturally translate into your life after college? Isn't "dirty rushing" the equivalent of using the "old boys' network"?
It's a competitive world, we all worked hard to get into UVA in the first place. I had UVA alumni write letters of recommendation for me. It makes sense to me to aim as high as I can. The popularity of this thread tells me other girls sre thinking the same thing.
I work hard and I play hard. I want to be part of an awesome sisterhood that likes to do the same. I'm not looking for just a social club for four years. For me, this is a lifetime commitment. So for me, a sorority's national reputation is important. The top tiers tend to have the strongest nationals.

Copied from another thread
Found this:
10 Largest Sororities by Members
Chi Omega: 300,000 members
Kappa Alpha Theta: 250,000 members
Delta Delta Delta: 238,000 members
Kappa Kappa Gamma: 235,000 members
Pi Beta Phi : 230,000 members
(tie) Kappa Delta: 230,000 members
Delta Zeta: 220,000 members
Alpha Delta Pi: 215,000 members
Alpha Chi Omega: 210,000 members
Zeta Tau Alpha: 207,000 members
Thought it was interesting that the top tiers are also some of the largest nationally.
Out of curiousity I looked up the rest on grounds
DG 205,000 members
APhi 200,000 members
Gamma Phi Beta 200,000 members
Sigma Kappa 160,000 members
Tri Sig 100,000 members
SDT 70,000
so the other tops DG and APhi are not too far from the others. had no idea Chi O was so big.

Is it possible to be completely unknown before rush and still get a bad from a top sorority? Is everyone guaranteed a bid?
