is rush any different than all the pre rush stuff

I've been to a few pre rush events and BBQs and despite meeting guys and exachanging names and numbers and all that I don't get how you guys choose who to bid out of the hundreds of guys at these things. Is rush anymore structured because it seems like all of this is super ingenuine
