Would you do UM again?

by:

Male, HS Senior just got off waitlist and considering attending. Can I ask honest ? though?

Male or Female? What year are you? Would you attend Miami again if you could back in time?

Bonus points if you give a brief reason for why or why not. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!

Male sophomore, would definitely do it again. Us sophomores missed out on the glory days of UM Greek life by one or two years though:/

thats what I’ve been reading on here. Are you in a fraternity? Would your answer to the question be different if you were not in greek life?

I appreciate the insight. Just trying to decide because it seems like guys at UM arent quite as happy especially those not in frats and Im unsure about rushing

Happy to help, and yes I am in a fraternity. Didn’t join until this past fall and I can safely say that being a geed sucks at Miami (ironically I committed to Miami bc I thought greek life wouldn’t be a thing). If you can afford it I definitely recommend rushing

ok cool. Thank you! Has joining a frat made it much better? I keep reading that being a guy at Miami and not in a frat basically sucks. Im really not sure about going down that route yet. I know the rankings are stupid but would you say you are in a “top frat, middle or lower” and can you get a fun experience in any of them

you can have a fun experience with all of the top tier and mid tier frats. It all depends on the vibe you want. As for girls, you will be set no matter what frat you join as they all have their groupies save for the bottom two. If you’re into nightlife and venues I’d recommend sig ep chi Sammy and aepi. If you’re more into traditional parties I’d say pi kapp sae beta and phi delt. If you’re more laid back and don’t care about socializing you’re probably better off being a gdi but I don’t recommend that

thanks a lot man. I really appreciate it. im just worried that i might not want to join a frat and without one it would be socially dead.

my deposit is at BC. Im from the midwest. Was happy with decision and especially the no greek life part b/c eased some pressure off having to join to be social. UM seems similar (size, suburb location, outside big city) except for the greek part. Thats my concern

im a girl but miami is definitely a way more fun city than boston in my opinion and the weather is a lot better too obviously. BC is probably a better school academically especially if youre majoring in business but if you dont fit the preppy white/ christian stereotype it might be harder to fit in there. I have a lot of friends who go to school in Boston and for the most part they say there really isnt a fun party scene there since Boston is notoriously strict on fakes. Tailgates at BC are also very tame compared to Miami and while youll probably be able to get in it won’t be a crazy party like it would be at UM or other southern schools. Both UM and BC have very different vibes as schools tho (i toured both and my personality did not match with BC at all and i i cant see most of my friends at UM ever choosing to go to BC), so I think maybe try to imagine which of the two environments you can see yourself fitting in with more. From my personal experience I would choose Miami again.

awesome, thank you. Yeah I mean that's why Im here is I am considering switching to UM, but am concerned that I won't really get a good social scene as a guy if I don't get a bid or decide greek life isn't for me. I know you are a girl, but how much worse or less fun is the school if you are a guy not in a frat. Everything else points to UM for me, but I don't want to go through 4 years without attending parties or getting a college social experience and it sounds like a frat is the only way at UM.

There are some parties that geeds can go yo but they are few and far between, and often times they require you to pay a cover charge (not worth it for the type of parties they are). As for whether you will get a bid or not just be chill yet memorable and you’ll do fine. Also it definitely helps to know ppl in the frat before coming to UM (definitely go to pre rush events like b-ball tournaments and what not to get your face out there if you don’t already know some one). It wouldn’t hurt to ask them to hang out during your fall semester just don’t be annoying about it and ask to go to every move.

One last thing. Make sure you get a good chill group of friends to rush with, and if you do know someone in the frat(s) you wanna rush, make sure to introduce them as well so you have a leg up during formal rush. These are all things I wish I knew when I rushed, and I hope this helps

ok so basically if you're a normal guy who had friends in hs you'll most likely get into a mid tier frat the first/ second time you rush i mean from my understanding Pike is mid tier and will take almost anyone bc theyre new and they still had a pretty good social calendar last semester so odds are if you talk to people and make friends on your floor and just talk to people in your classes freshman year youll be fine to rush spring semester when all the freshman officially rush. The fear of not liking Greek life once youre in it but still wanting to have a crazy social life doesnt really make sense to me because if you don't like frat parties once youre in Greek life why would you want to go to them after you drop? That said one of my friends did drop from a top tier frat and still gets in some closed greek events at UM because he still has friends in that frat and the other frats and some other geeds i know will occasionally be let into a party or tailgate if theyre good friends with some brothers. Theres also definitely club events, bars in the grove, and raves/concerts to go to in miami if youre into that which will give you a fun social environment. i know guys who arent in a frat and still go out and love UM but you wont find them on greekrank because this site is full of guys who were initially a geed and didnt like it and went greek. Theres no reason for a guy whos happy being unaffiliated to be on a site completely about Greek life so keep that in mind and maybe post your question on reddit or something for a different perspective lol

Absolutely would choose this school, in 100 different lifetimes. I'm a sophomore guy who rushed fall of sophomore year, FWIW.

I think the best part of this campus you won't find elsewhere is that the vibe is just unmatched. It's so easy to make friends here, explore the city, try new things, and at the same time you're getting a solid education. It's rigorous enough where you learn, but not overkill like those elite northeast schools where everyone wants to slash each others' throats for an A while studying 10 hours a day. Maybe pre-med's the exception with a few psychos here and there lol, but even then most of them are super chill. This campus is probably the complete 180 opposite of cutthroat. Everyone's just here to have fun and get a good education.

As for Greek Life, it's honestly pretty cut and dry. You either know you wanna party and have fun here, or you have other interests that aren't social (which is totally fine too!). Joining a frat was a great decision for me, since it got me out of my shell, but it's definitely not for everyone. As a middle-class kid, it was definitely a culture shock to see some guys drop $1,000's a week on tables here like it's pocket change, trying to "one-up" each other. I ultimately made a lot of quality friends but it'll vary for each kid. If you're set on Greek Life and you're cool (as in not socially weird), it's not impossible to get bids from mid-tiers, which can be a ton of fun.

Just my 2 cents. Congrats on getting off the waitlist btw!

yea that was definitely a culture shock seeing people our age drop bread like that.
