speaking the truth

by:

If people around here only knew how utterly stupid they looked arguing about “rankings” and which frat is cooler/which sorority is “hotter”...

I honestly never thought I’d attend a school that was so utterly superficial, egotistical, and shallow. I realize that Miami tends to draw materialism and superficiality, but arguing about which frat has “the chillest dudes” and which sorority has the hottest girls on an anonymous website takes it to a whole new level of immaturity. I am sorely disappointed in my fellow students for contributing to this cesspool and giving UM a name that it doesn’t deserve. Frankly, no one cares about your ranking system no matter how “accurate” or “how it is” it might look because qualities like attractiveness are entirely subjective, and I don’t know why as adults we can’t seem to figure that out.

Think Pi Kapp is hot stuff? That’s your opinion. Think SDT is a top sorority? That’s your opinion. Sometimes I can’t tell if the people here go to the most prestigious school in Florida or a frat-obsessed state school, which is honestly shameful. Honestly, the whole “ranking system” isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, but I think there are more like-minded individuals around here who are perhaps too shy/intimidated to post their true thoughts. It’s time we started thinking like the elite institution that we are and stopped obsessing over something as shallow as ranking each other based on coolness and “frattyness”.

If you dislike it so much you could transfer. Sorry you didn't get the bid you wanted.

This is exactly what I’m talking about. Someone stands up to what’s wrong with Greek life and it’s automatically assumed that the writer is taking out anger on the system from personal anguish which simply isn’t true. This isn’t a mater of bids, this is a matter of toxicity and culture which has turned Greek life into something unrecognizable and sad.

The website is used for every school with Greek life. If u don’t like the site then don’t get on it. People don’t really talk about rankings in person so then you’ll never know and live a happy life.

I think you’re missing the point of the post. I never said I had anything against the website. I have a problem with the superficiality and immaturity of people’s need to rank one another based on made up qualities that are entirely subjective.

And you’re right. People don’t talk about rankings in person. Why? Because hiding behind a screen means you don’t have to be forthcoming and honest.

You make good points. Lot of kids at UM are spoiled and aren’t the nicest of people. My advice would be is just do you and don’t worry about anything else. Confidence is king

Lol you are mad about rankings but on a website called "greekrank"... Lol makes sense. Go to any college and this happens. Dont join frat life if you don't like it, or, better yet, refrain from using the site lmao

I know what this website is called and I’m aware of what it entails. Frankly, we should be ranking our Greek system on other criteria than hotness and frattyness. UM does Greek life unequivocally wrong. If you have to rank Greek organizations, fine, but base it on criteria which you would be proud to engage discussion on, not which sorority is the hottest.

To address your point on not liking frats. I don’t have an issue with frats and sororities, to be honest I don’t have an issue with social life or parties. I had a vibrant social life while in a frat and I continue to have one after getting out of it.

We’re giving our school a terrible name given the types of posts one can see by visiting our discussion page. It really disappoints me to jo end to see people argue back and forth about which sorority pledge class is the hottest and which fraternity has the “chillest dudes”. As I mentioned - think frat X is hot stuff? That’s your opinion. Think sorority Y got a hot pledge class? That’s your opinion. Schools like Harvard, Stanford, etc. don’t have these types of issues and to be honest I thought we were much closer to those schools than we are to Penn State and West Virginia and other low ranking frat-obsessed schools.

I'm not sure where the problem is? Like as long as the school has Greek life ppl are gonna debate the merits of the various made up clubs. The main selling points are chillness/hotness. It is what it is. And it's no different at USC, UPenn, Dartmouth or any other "esteemed academic institution."

If a college has Greek life, the real issues are the uptick in alcohol, hazing and substance abuse that accompany the groups. But colleges tolerate the obvious flaws because high school kids think Greek life is a good feature so applications increase, and it helps to attract wealthier students so less FA money is needed. Former frat bros also tend to donate more.

And there is not a silver bullet. Do any of your friends go to schools without frats? At a lot of schools without Greek life the same social rifts emerge, largely based on physical attractiveness. As an example, there probably were not Greek letter organizations at your high school but I'll bet everything I have that the "hot girls" hung out in their own exclusive clique. It sounds like you're upset about human nature.

It’s sad you care this much. Get over it. Every school ranks Greek life even ivy leagues. Nothings going to change so move on. This whole post is a waste of energy on your end. Do your homework or something you think qualifies as a “worthy” activity since you hate this site so much and what it stands for.

I think what’s sad is that posts like this are necessary. Some people take the side of the status quo, while some people think the whole ranking system should be done away with. If it’s sad that I made this post then it’s equally sad that everyone ranking posts exists. I just happen to take the opposite side.

Buddy, you're totally wrong about this.

While your heart might be in the wrong place, this makes as much sense as getting mad about the weather. It has been this way since before we had a printing press and will remain this way long after we're gone.

The frats and sororitys do nothing but codify the underlying reality on the ground. Why do you think "dirty rush" is a thing with girls and the "top frats" already have their freshman targets set before September starts?

Go to a school without official Greek life. There is no difference except less hazing. Hot girls and douche bros form their own groups. It happens in the dorms long before rush or recruitment. You're like an old man yelling at a cloud here. Smokes who don't rush date the same pool of guys. For men it's a little different. But the make believe Greek letters really change nothing.

“The frats and sororitys do nothing but codify the underlying reality on the ground.” Not true at all here, maybe other schools, but UM is notoriously bad, and dirty in the worst ways possible. The system here is frankly terrible, not because there are winners and losers or because of superficial people, those are given, but because it’s imbalanced, corrupt, inefficient and miscalculating.

Very happy that a post like this was finally submitted and that someone is intelligent enough to think the same. It disgusts me how shallow minded many of the individuals at UM are. I am in the "top sorority" and quite frankly it is everything but what I expected it to be. My experience in it has been awful and so disingenuous. Every reason why I joined the sorority in the first place has proven itself to be the opposite. It is petty and a waste of time. Greek life lasts 4 years while you are in college, it is meaningless.

Discussion is a powerful thing. I’m glad to have stirred the pot a little bit in the Greek community around here. While it’s sad that some people have very negative experiences in Greek life, it’s nothing that can’t be fixed. The Greek community is a product of what we put into it. The unfortunate state of the system is only a result of our own contributions.
