Ranks are no longer relevant!

by:

Advice to PNM’s: please do not buy into these “rankings” as holding any degree of truth or insight into the chapter that is the best fit for you. Maybe in the past rankings by desirability provided some insight. Now, with 40+% of PNM’s coming from oos, the most desired looks different and is totally dependent on who you are and what you hope to gain from a sisterhood. The traditionally “most desired” (ADPI, AGD, KD) may still be looked at that way by girls from bham schools that are hoping for a sisterhood full of girls they know from high school. But for those in state girls who want to expand their horizons and aren’t looking for high school 2.0, and for oos girls, “most desired” looks a lot different. While you can find all types in every house, they all bring individual vibes. “Most desired” depends on the PNM. Yes, if you are about sticking with what and who you know - ADPI, AGD. If you are about IG rep, looks, and like to party - PM, PI PHI. If you are about a focus on academics - AXO, XO(and plenty of time for studying with them on yet another sopro). If pretty, well rounded girls from a variety of places with a still southern vibe (think Carolinas, Texas, Tennessee, Florida) appeal to you - GPHI, ZTA. Relaxed, quieter vibe - DG, DZ, Theta. Quirky mix - KKG, AXi. Party vibe and lots of girls from northern states - PI PHI, SK. Chapter you can grow with Tri Sig. Heavy campus involvement - AGD, XO, and Tri Delt, GPhi, AXO starting to build a presence. And by all means, if following in footsteps of your mom, sister, or older girls from bham is your focus - stick with the old school traditional “top”. With a dramatic shift in the Auburn student body, comes a shift in what makes a chapter “top” for sure. Any post that is still “ranking” is outdated.

Agree 100%. As an oos pnm last year, I never wanted to have to try to find my place in already established high school cliques. The traditional “tops”, or any that felt overwhelmingly “instate” were never on my “most desired list”.

This is SOOO true! Ranks truly dont matter! You still get swaps, socials, sisterhood, etc in all of the chapters! I am an instate active who wasn’t looking at rank or highschool 2.0, but rather vibe and how i fit in! i love my chapter and if i listened to “ranks” i probably wouldve overlooked them!

There is another very important 'rank' factor that PNM's need to understand: The sororities do the choosing, not so much the PNM's, and the selection process is not really 'mutual'.

While PNM's do rank the chapters at every round, the sororities do not ever see these ranks and don't consider them when deciding who to invite back the next round. It doesn't matter how high you rank a sorority, if you're not high enough to make their cutoff number for whatever round, you will be released. A PNM's ranks only come into play if she would receive more invitations back to a round than the schedule allows. In this case her low ranked ones drop off, but otherwise PNM's don't drop chapters they only rank them. You will keep getting as many chapters back as possible for any round.

You do not start off your recruitment according to the way you rank the chapters after Ice Water Teas. This is why getting your second round schedule back for Philanthropy is often the biggest shock. Philanthropy invitation lists will have already been made by the sororities before you set foot on campus and watch the chapter videos. The sororities work all summer reviewing each PNM's grades, resume, video, IG, etc, and also take into account if they know PNM's from high school or other personal connections. They rank the PNM's based on this information, and after all PNM's are registered, the chapters cutoffs are calculated by panhellenic and this will decide the PNM's invitations and where they go for Philanthropy. Not many PNM's at all get to have chapters drop off their schedule, and hardly anyone gets a full one.

*** So PNM's, don't let yourself get fixated on any particular chapters before recruitment, you need to get your Philanthropy schedule back to see what your ACTUAL options are going to be. This is another reason why the so-called ranks and tiers are stupid, they don't matter to your recruitment, the sororities do the choosing.
