ox thoughts?

by: OX

I am an active of Theta Chi at another school although considering a transfer to Auburn as a second semester sophomore. What are your thoughts on this chapter and their reputation?

I wouldn't go to this site looking for information. They're one of the more ripped on fraternities on this site so you likely won't get valid opinions and info on them.

Pros:
- REALLY nice house (if not the nicest)
- good numbers
- likely will be top tier at some point (many people will argue with me but in my eyes they are certainly not top tier yet and probably won't be for a couple years)
- relatively active

Cons:
- Close to the most expensive fraternity on campus (if not the highest). I think dues are almost 5 or 6 thousand a year (and from my understanding that is without even living in the house)
- Need numbers (to pay for their house) so they give out a lot of bids to middle and bottom tier kids which hurts their overall rating. Again they do have some top tier guys but it's like a 50 50 split.
- People (including myself I'll admit) resent them because they essentially "bought" their way into being a good fraternity with their monstrous house.
- Finally they tend to see themselves as "top tier" and pretend like people just don't like them but they are really a top fraternity. Short answer is they are not a top tier but an upper middle tier which could be top in a couple years.

My thoughts:
Assuming you can afford the dues I would say absolutely join them. They are pretty decent and I'm sure you will have a lot of fun with them. If you can't afford them I would rush one of the other middle tier fraternities.

I respect your opinion because everybody has their own. I personally would agree that it is annoying that they did buy their way to the top when mine worked to get it's top tier spot. However, I do have friends in Theta Chi so I have to give them some support in relation to their "tier".

Most would say top 10 is top tier and many would put Lambda Chi, Sig Ep, ATO, and maybe Sigma Pi in the top 10 right? Theta Chi is absolutely better than all of those names so wouldn't it make sense that they would be considered "top tier"? I'd easily put KA, Fiji, Sigma Nu, Beta, SAE, and MAYBE Sigma Chi ahead of them but that's only 5 or 6 fraternities. Point is, I think it's safe to call Theta Chi a "Top Tier' just not top 5.

First off not every fraternity is right for everyone and I think the idea of ranking fraternities into tiers is stupid. Ya know for some people TKE is probably a better choice than Fiji. All that being said if you had the whole of auburn rank the fraternities Lambda Chi, Sig Ep, ATO, KA, Fiji, Sigma Nu, Beta, SAE, Sig Chi, and I would say FH (I hate everyone I have met from FH but they would get good rating because a lot of people like them) would all be above Theta Chi. I went to you guys spring party (can't remember what it was called) while it was really good it was mediocre compared to some of the other fraternities I've listed's parties. I'd say you guy have a good chance of passing Lambda Chi soon (they have really been out of the loop the past couple years) and maybe ATO. The thing is ATO makes good grades and tend to get decent pledge classes somehow but if they don't get a real house soon they are done for.

It's rush and other fraternities will try to sway views in order to get pledges. If you really are a transfer - which I doubt - then simply go visit and make up your own mind. Also, you can request the updated yearly dues from the IFC and see that their dues have actually gone down and no they are not the highest at Auburn. Ask non biased people about their brotherhood, parties, involvement in SGA - IFC - etc, good numbers of well over 100 members, and so on. If you listen to competing fraternities during rush then you are not getting a true perception.

If you're hated then that means you're doing something right. I'd take all this bashing as a compliment if I were y'all.

It's like every time I get on here someone is ripping on Theta Chi for something. My question is are we all determined to shoot down Theta Chi on a regular basis? I understand the fact that they literally blew a few years ago and now have made a complete 180 and made huge progress in a short period of time. They're all nice guys so I guess other top fraternities just don't want another competetor? That is the only reason I can think of for all this bashing. I'm just confused. Could someone enlighten me?

yes, a big part of the hate comes from the fact that they were nothing without there new house. IDK about the past year but when i went through the whole rush thing a couple years ago they literally handed out bids like candy and i know they did it at least a year after that too. I agree they have improved a lot but imo to be a top fraternity you need to be selective. A decent chunk of the brothers at Theta Chi would not have gotten bids at say Fiji which is a top tier. I bet 99% of Fiji's would get bids at OX or say Beta (another often considered top tier). It's kinda like how Harvard is a better school than say Kentucky.

I agree with 'kind of'. In order to be a top you need to be selective which Theta Chi has not been. Last year was the first year they were actually somewhat selective. I'd say about 40% of their last pledge class would get bids a top fraternities. However, one decent pledge class doesn't mean anything. Theta Chi's pledge class this year will determine where they stand. It's all about consistency of great pledge classes so we'll see.
