letters of recommendation

by:

So im looking into 3 different SEC schools and UF is the only one whose greek rank isn't covered in questions about letters of recommendation. I was wondering if they are common and if they help girls get top tier houses!

They are common and you should do your best to secure them for every house. They help you at all houses. 1-2 per house is ideal. Not mandatory but they help more than you'd think

They might help you get through round one but beyond that and for top houses they don't do much. Definitely get them, but I don't think they do much

If you can, get them: they don't hurt you! So, ones from alumnae aren't as strong as from active sisters, unless its from a woman who was in the chapter at the same school. We had a girl come through with a letter from someone on our national council. We knew she was perfect the moment we met her, and she got extra attention during Round 1 because she had a strong letter. My chapter places legacies first. They and women with letters get more attention than those with neither.

If you don't mind me asking, which chapter are you in?

No, but I'll say what I mean by 'more attention': we know their coming, so we pair them up with women who have similar interests to help get conversation going quickly.

You can get rec letters from an active in the sorority? Do you mean girls in that specific chapter or actives at a different school?

So, I may be wrong on this for all chapters, but you can be recommended by a current member - from any school. Now, if they're in the chapter here, their opinion carries more weight, as they know who would potentially be a great fit. That doesn't mean that other letters of rec are useless. If you can get one well written, deep letter for each chapter that really shows that the woman recommending you knows you well and believes you're a fit - you've struck gold.
Letters of rec are in no way a guarantee of a bid, or being asked back for that matter.
AND I completely agree: go where you feel comfortable. A chapter that feels like home is what you're looking for. Because for you time in college, it will serve as your home. I felt this was for a few houses and ended up only having 1 I felt comfortable in by Prefs. So, ranking that night was really easy! (PS: DO NOT SUICIDE BID, IT HURTS YOUR CHANCES!!!)

Trust your gut, ignore tent talk and what people tell you, and follow your heart. That's how to find your true sorority home!

They help in the first round. Very hard to get into the top houses at UF. The top houses at UF are ADPI, KD, ZTA, DDD, DG...... otherwise the remaining houses middle to lower tier.....hope this helps... UF has a Huge Greek community.

I was a legacy at DDD.... did not get a bid at UF, and I was glad I did not as this house has changed( for the worse) since my mother was a member in the 80's.... DDD use to rock, not so much anymore. My point is going into rush with a open mind... I did get a bid from another top house ( UF) that I am much happier at this house. I did not have a letter of rec. BUT, I had friends at this house.... not everything appears to be what it seems. GO where you feel at home regardless of top, middle or bottom tier status.... it does not matter..... where do you feel at home? I also felt at home in some of the middle to lower tier houses...

Related question: how do you go about getting recs? After exhausting people you know what should you do? Also, what is the timeline for recs?

I did a suicide this year, and I got my top choice. I could not see myself at the other two houses that I went to Pref's..... I had to suicide. I took the chance because I really did not the other two houses........ I found out later that my top choice really wanted me too, from the get go and they wanted me before prefs.... please follow your heart... that is what I did......... I would not have taken a bid from the other two houses. Period. If I would have not got a bid, I would have been fine with it. I wanted my first choice really bad. And I got it. My mother also did the suicide here at UF, she also got her 1st choice. Suicide works, trust me.....

The computers move you down the list is you suicide! You and your mother got lucky because you stood out to the chapter, so you were prob at the very top of their bid lists. Suicide hurts your chances if you are not at that very top 25-50% of the list. If you are on their lower or even flex list, you won't get matched until everyone who didn't suicide gets match. So, usually you get left in the cold. Its not a safe bet. If you'd rather not be in the other two and you feel like you're the tip top of the list, fine do it; You'll at least not take a bid from someone who wanted the other two chapters. But, seriously, they tell you not to do it because there is a penalty in the system that puts you down the list.
Be safe, don't suicide.
