I rushed last year but didn't end up in a sorority and I'm wondering how people decide who gets a bid and who doesn't.. I'm pretty sure I'm not weird or awkward, in not gorgeous but I also don't look like a troll I get good grades I like going out I'm friends with people in sororities that dropped me so how do you really decide who gets in a sorority and who doesn't?

Hi! A lot of it has to do with if the sister who rushed you can see you fitting into the sorority.
For example, I rushed quite a few girls that I absolutely loved. I wanted to be their best friend and take them to get ice cream and cry over boys and watch chick flicks with these girls. But I couldn't see them in my sorority. It wasn't superficial, I just couldn't picture them hanging out in our living room or eating dinner with all of us. It sounds weird, but when we have to process 1700+ girls, we can't spend our time trying to figure out if a girl would fit in when we have hundreds of others we think might work well with our dynamic already.
I know it sucks to not get a bid, but it wasn't you. It just means that the sisters who rushed you just didn't see you in their home, fitting in with their sisters.

But if you thought you could be friends with them how could you not see them in your sorority? I just don't understand how you can like someone but then think they wouldn't fit in with your house

Even if your friend sees you as a perfect sister you might not get a bid. There are so many other things involved in membership selection and...fact is, the rest of the chapter outnumbers your friend.

There is a lot of "trust your sisters" about the process so if you meet 5 or more girls during recruitment who think you are a bad fit, the chapter is likely gonna vote no even if your friend sticks up for you.

Sorry truth hurts.

Then when you go through recruitment again the whole chapter remembers the negatives that were discussed last year and is even less likely to bid you...

Do you know how superficial that actually sounds? If you are unaware: very.

When I meet a girl I really click with, damn right I want her to be in my house. It's the girls I don't click with as well who I end up recommending to get cut.

So you'd rather fill your house with girls you don't click with but whom you can imagine being in your house? It kind of sounds like that comes down to looks in the end for you...

Rush ΓΦΒ. I have friends of all types that wouldn't fit in with my house but would fit in perfectly elsewhere. I have other friends who are like peas in a lid with me who are in other houses. After H.S. you realize that it's okay to have a whole spectrum of friends.

If you have friends who are in houses that doesn't mean they don't see you as a sister or didn't fight for you.

I can't believe how many GR posters are spewing this bs of "my friends don't fit in with my house." I guess it depends on what kind of friends. If we are good friends you best believe you'd fit in at my house (this is thentype of friend I'm thinking about). If we are not close or acquaintences then yeah sure you might not fit in and I might not want you.

Having said that, even if I 500% want someone in my house, with the way membership selection works for my chapter, she might still not get a bid...even if I fight for her. I've seen it happen...

Now on to you... I'd encourage you to go Gamma Phi because I think they are gonna take this campus by storm. You sound like the type of girl I think they are looking for. It's gonna be competitive but if you do it you'll get a lifetime of sisterhood.

Rush is short, fast, fake, and superficial. So, lots of girls who belong in houses get cut, and lots of houses choose girls who don't belong. Throw in the fake "tiers" into the mix and it gets worse: girls choosing "top tier" houses and regretting it, realizing the "top tier" reputation comes from perv frat boys.
