sophomore
by: EmbarrassedI am a freshman right now and have gotten cut from every house but one. Believe me when I tell you I have tried to love this house. I have tried to see myself in said house and I just can't do it. Being in a sorority was one of the things I really wanted to do in college. What are some options for me? Is rushing as a sophomore that hard? Especially in the spring? Would Gamma Phi Beta be a good option instead? I'm just afraid I would miss out on a lot with GPB

You have a few options:
1) Stay in the process, go to pref, and see if your mind changes then. I didn't really start to love my house until Round 3 (but wasn't even 100% in love with it until initiation, way after bid day). After the pref party, you can decide against it, not sign a preference card, and try one of the other options I'm listing here. You don't lose anything by at least doing this, and you get free dessert at the party.
2) Put your name in for COB. Very few houses will have spots open, but it happens because girls drop for a variety of reasons. You might get invited to the house for dinner, etc., and get a bid that way after meeting more sisters. The chance this works out is low but not 0%, and is much higher if you actually know someone in the house already.
3) Rush GPhiB! Yes, you won't have a house at first, but you will get everything else about the experience: socials, initiation, big sisters, Homecoming, etc. And being a founding member can be really neat and help you create the culture and tone of a new sisterhood! Note: GPhiB will be selective too, nobody is guaranteed a spot. This is a particularly good option for upperclassmen, though, as they'll want a colonization class that is balanced by year.
4) Try spring. Like COB (option 2) above.
5) Try again next fall. I have friends who did it. Most fared much worse the second time around but two fared much better and actually wound up in very selective houses that had cut them before.

Honestly, if I were you I would give it a try. There is no feeling like bid day and you feel so welcomed by everyone, it may change your mind. If it doesn't you can drop a sorority before you are initiated and re-rush the next year. I think it may be a little harder to rush as a sophomore, but you may get lucky with quotas that some my need. Also, you would have the experience of already previously rushing so you may be able to work on your talking points and be a little more comfortable during the process.

Sorry about your rush experience so far. It think it sucks that they do rush right when you first get to school and all excited about starting college and you go thru this quick process, that can be hurtful for people. Only you can decide if you want to go through with the one house. If you really don feel like you fit in there, then dont do it. There are many people who dont even go thru the greek experience and still love college. Also, you are very likley to meet & develop friendships with people from a number of different sororities this year, and if so they may provide you wiht more insight and options on joining their sorority next year. I know you feel bad now, and I really feel for you, but you will see that you can still have a great freshman year. Don't focus on what you cant control, instead focus on having a great year. You are obviously very smart and accomplished or you wouldnt be at UF in the first place! So keep your head held up and be proud that you are at UF. Things have a way of working themselves out, and some very good opportunites may come from this current disappontment! All the best ot you!!!

Have you been to the round 3 party yet? If not, give them another shot as your conversations in round three will be more meaningful. Consider the fact that you have only met a handful of sisters in a chapter that has over 200 members. There are so many great women in every chapter here at UF. I'm sure be able to find your niche in any group. Many times "I just don't see myself there is code for I think I'm too good for this this chapter.' But remember if they didn't see you as a potential member they would have released you along with the other houses. Recruitment as a sophomore can be a little harder and you may find the results just as extreme. Many have gone through sophomore year but there are no guarantees that the number of your invites will be better as numbers increase every year. Being a charter member of a new organization give you the opportunity to establish something new but again like you mentioned you will miss out on having a house for probably your whole time at UF. Hope your year goes well whatever you decide:)
#5by: Go with your Gut
If you do not see your self there then just get out of the process and go Next Year! More sophomores get the houses THEY want because they have the experience of going through Rush. Friend of mine dropped out first year after last 3 houses she could not see herself in at all. Then sophomore year the odds were in her favor, she met women at multiple houses and the had the full 11 then 7 then 3 that SHE wanted and made it. Freshmen girls are at a serious disadvantage. Sophomore girls rule Rush because they are experienced.
Go with your Gut! If you don't see yourself there then get out. If you get out before Prefs you can go through Spring Rush. If you go to Prefs you have to wait a year.

Give the one house that wants you a chance! Who cares what all these puerile losers hallucinating about "tiers" think?
Let me break it to you: THERE ARE NO TIERS. There is not a single Panhellenic authority - and I mean AUTHORITY - that "ranks" sororities into "tiers" or any other list of superior or inferior houses. It simply DOES NOT EXIST. Which is why none of these puerile girls preening about their "rank" never point you to an authority backing their claims.
These supposed "tiers" are the mere fancy of the imaginations of insecure girls with low self esteem who conjure these "tiers" to make themselves feel better. It's all really sad to behold.
